| Description |
English: Worsley Delph. This is the starting point of the Bridgewater Canal which was opened in 1763 and was one of our first canals. Built to transport coal from the Duke of Bridgewater's mines here around Worsley to Manchester. The canal went underground here to the mines through two tunnels (the arch of one can be made out at the head of the channel to the left of the steps) which joined together after about 500 yards. Altogether about 50 miles of underground waterway were constructed linking the mines to the outside world. Specially designed narrow barges were used in the underground system (see 90030). These were moved between different levels using water powered inclined planes and lifts. The canal also served to drain the mines. Iron minerals in the rocks colour the canal waters hereabouts and the canal at Worsley has long been famous for its "ochre" water. A scheme has recently been put into operation to "clean up" this colouration involving the construction of large filtration lagoons. This decision was not welcomed by all the local population (see 23978). |
