DescriptionWounded are taken from USS Mablehead (CL-12) at Tjilatjap in February 1942.jpg |
Wounded sailors from the U.S. Navy light cruiser USS Marblehead (CL-12) are taken from the ship onto a hospital train at Tjilatjap, Java, on 4 February 1942. Marblehead had suffered 15 dead or mortally wounded and 84 seriously injured in air attacks during the Battle of Makassar Strait on the same day. Marblehead would not fit in the dry dock at Tjilatjap, but the hole in the hull was temporarily repaired, and the ship sailed for the east coast of the U.S. by way of Ceylon and South Africa for repairs, finally arriving at the New York Navy Yard on 4 May.
