IWM caption : Two members of the Womens Royal Naval Service (Wrens) work on a Oerlikon 20mm cannon in Mark I mounting. FURTHER INFORMATION:

One Ordnance Wren adjusts the height of the mounting via the wheel handle on the left of the mounting. The distinctive Oerlikon magazine which is fitted into the top of the breech has been removed. Original caption: WRENS OVERHAUL WARSHIPS GUNS. 16 MARCH 1943, LIVERPOOL, ORDINANCE WORK IS YET ANOTHER JOB TAKEN OVER BY THE MEMBERS OF THE WRNS TO RELEASE MORE MEN FOR THE SEA. AFTER TAKING A COURSE ON THIS VERY IMPORTANT SUBJECT THESE GIRLS, NOW QUALIFIED ORDINANCE WRENS, BOARD HM SHIPS ON ARRIVAL TO STRIP DOWN THE GUNS, CLEAN THEM AND TO CARRY OUT ADJUSTMENTS. Original description: Aboard an escort vessel qualified Ordinance Wrens work on an Oerlikon gun.
