Title
Wrist clasp
Description
English: A complete cast copper-alloy hookpiece from a Anglo-Saxon sleeve or wrist clasp of Hines Class B12 (Hines 1993, 46-49).

This hookpiece is formed of a bar alone, this bar is measures 27mm in length and 17mm in total width, it is rectangular in shape with a shaped rear edge opposite a projecting hook-element. The integral cast hook-element projects from the centre of the front edge. It is rectangular in shape and measures 12mm in length by 4mm in width externally and 5mm in length and 2.5mm in width internally. This hole would have accomodated the catch element of the missing half of this wrist clasp.

The bar is decorated on its front face. It has a recessed rectangular panel in its centre, 13mm in length and 6mm in width. Two opposing longitudinal boarders of crescent shaped indentations can be seen within this recess. There is then a step down to the shaped rear edge. Along the inside edge of this there is a longitudinal row of small circular indentations. The shaped rear edge has a cental triangular shape with rectangular terminals to either side of this. Through the centre of these rectangular terminals there are circular sewing holes, c2.7mm in diameter, which would have allowed the hookpiece of this wrist clasp to be sown to the garment.

A similar hookpiece has been discovered in Fonaby, Lincs (Hines 1993, 47, fig 90, f). Clasps of this type are concentrated in and around East Anglia and are generally datable to the 6th century (Hines 1993, 46-47).
