English: Wroxeter Roman City (2) - the site viewed from the original Watling Street, near to Wroxeter, Shropshire, Great Britain.
The minor road which passes the site was the original Watling Street; an ancient trackway first given a hard surface by the Romans. As can be seen, apart from the large standing wall, known as "the Old Work", there is not a great deal to be looked at. The city is thought to have been finally abandoned in the 7th century, when the area came under the control of the Kingdom of Mercia. That then encouraged the use of the site as a building quarry, and so Roman stone from here can be found in the church in Wroxeter village, and other buildings. Apart from the Old Work, what you can see today has been excavated, but the majority of the remains of the city still lie undisturbed under the ground. |
