Die erste promovierte Ärztin in Deutschland

Schon früh hatte der Arzt und Stadtphysicus von Quedlinburg, Christian Leporin sen. (1689-1747) begonnen, seine Tochter Dorothea in Medizin und Naturwissenschaften zu unterrichten. Seit ihrem 16. Lebensjahr begleitete Dorothea ihren Vater und assistierte ihm. Nach seinem Tod 1747 setzte sie seine Praxis fort. Doch eine Zulassung zum Medizinstudium und zur Promotion verwehrte ihr die Universität Halle - bis König Friedrich der Großen nach mehreren Eingaben die Universität Halle anwies, sie zur Promotion zuzulassen.

Im Mai 1754 legte sie ihr Examen and der Universität Halle ab und wurde zum Doktor der Medizin promoviert. Titel Ihrer Dissertation: "Gründliche Untersuchung der Ursachen, die das weibliche Geschlecht vom Studieren abhalten." Die Professoren würdigten dem König gegenüber die ausgezeichneten medizinischen Kenntnisse und Leistungen von Dorothea Erxleben. Inzwischen hatte Dorothea Leporin den Witwer Irrer verstorbenen Cousine geheiratet, den Diakon Johann Christian Erxleben. Neben ihrer ärztlichen Tätigkeit zog sie in einer als glücklich überlieferten Ehe die fünf Kinder ihrer Cousine und noch vier eigene Kinder groß.
