Yeast cell platinum replica after freeze-fracture

Summary

edit
Description
English: Saccharomyces cerevisiae, bakers or brewers yeast, diluted with water, frozen to -50C and fractured quickly. The fracture face is coated with approximately 2nm of platinum in high vaccum and a carbon film for strength. The heat of the fracture melts the ice surrounding the yeast. The ice quickly refreezes at that temperature. Two large yeast bud scars are apparent in the picture. The almost black pieces are where the platinum replica folds or overlaps itself. Near the top center a small patch of fractured membrane underlying the cell wall is apparent.
