Description

A view from the west rim of Ubehebe Crater in the northern part of Death Valley National Park. It's pronounced "You-Be He-Be" if I've been informed correctly. This crater, nearly 1km across and 250m deep, is located at 37.02N 117.45W, and is the largest crater in a complex comprising over a dozen maar volcanoes (maars are shallow, flat bottomed craters formed by shallow explosive events -- likely a single event in the case of Ubehebe). The crater is approximately 6000 years old and the sides are made of soft, loose material allowing for exhilirating, full-speed runs straight down the slope.

In this image, two distinct rock units are easily visible in the far wall of the crater. The thin gray layer toward the top of the crater is primarily vesicular basaltic tephra, deposited during the eruption. The orange to yellow rocks visible below are the rocks that were in place in this spot prior to the eruption, made up of quaternary alluvial fan deposits.
