Private Ernest Lawrence, <a href="http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=99222" rel="noreferrer nofollow">son of John Lawrence of 101 Clifton Road, South Norwood, London</a>, was <a href="http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~dccfarr/sad.htm" rel="noreferrer nofollow">shot at dawn</a> by his own side for desertion. Usually men - boys sometimes - were shot for "cowardice" (shellshock and combat fatigue) or "poor discipline" (falling asleep on duty after being awake for several days). These executions were crimes against humanity; yet only in 2006 did the UK government abruptly and without giving plausible reasons do a volte-face on this subject and <a href="http://www.shotatdawn.org.uk" rel="noreferrer nofollow">pardon them all</a>. Only 90 years late, but to wait 10 years into a Labour government to get this is shameful.
