Description
English: CALIFORNIA — Rocko Brown, a doctoral candidate in geomorphology at the University of California-Davis, photographs the Yuba River Canyon, below Englebright Dam near Smartsville, Yuba County, California (Jan. 6, 2012).
  • Researchers at the University of California-Davis will use the images to create a virtual 3D model of the river canyon to aid future research.
  • Under the direction of the National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, which owns and manages the dam, has placed more than 5,000 tons of gravel in the river to improve spawning habitat for the threatened Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and Steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) species.
  • Dr. Greg Pasternack, professor of land, air and water resources at UC-Davis, designed the gravel injection project and is evaluating the gravel’s movement through the river course. (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers photo by Chris Gray-Garcia)
