| Description | This is the old Zachary-Waddell House, located on the grounds of the Zachary-Tolbert House at the Cashiers Historical Society in Cashiers, North Carolina. Constructed circa 1840 with additions and alterations around 1860 and 1925, the house is one of the oldest in the Cashiers Valley and was the home of Col. John A. Zachary, whose son Mordecai later built the Zachary-Tolbert House. The building was on a 640-acre tract owned by Col. John A. Zachary, which was divided among his three younger sons in 1846, with Mordecai maintaining possession of the house. The house has five bays in the original part of the house, the front wing, consisting of an entry door and two sets of nine-over-nine windows flanking it, with the structure sheathed in rustic weatherboard, has a large stone chimney at one end of the original structure, and has a shed-roofed porch that wraps around the opposite side of the house. The original structure is attached to a rear ell, added around 1860, which was later modernized to allow the house to function as a summer residence. The house was sold by the family in 1892, and changed hands many times, ending up under the ownership of Georgia P. Belknap and Charles Waddell, Jr. in 1925, whom enlarged the structure, adding dormers to both sides of the rear ell, which had been built into the original house around 1860, and enclosing parts of the porch of the rear ell to create a kitchen, with a bathroom being added in the upper part of the ell. The Waddell family used the home as a summer residence until about 2010, when they sold it to the adjacent landowners, the Cashiers Historical Society. Today, the house is part of the grounds of the Cashiers Historical Society, and appears to operate as part of the house museum that is run by the historical society, in tandem with the larger and more recent Zachary-Tolbert House next door. A vital surviving relic of the valley’s history, the Cabin shows the sort of houses lived in by early residents of the valley, which have vanished from most of the surrounding region as it has modernized. |
