This place in Yunnan province was formerly known as Zhongdian, but was renamed in 2001 after the fictional land of Shangri-La in the 1933 James Hilton novel Lost Horizon, in an effort to promote tourism in the area. A three day 'Horse Racing Festival' also known as 'Heavenly Steed Festival' is held some time in June, which involves dancing, singing and eating, in addition to the racing of horses.
