| Description | An official postcard of ORBIS posted in 1973. Perfect! Trolleybus wires are suspended above the speeding 603. Behind it are some modern buildings: modern in the mid-1930s that is. The Obchodní dům or Department Store was designed by the famous Frantisek Lydie Gahura in 1932, alongside his lower earlier store of 1927; The shoe store in the latter was orginally one of Bat'a's. Zlin - Gottwaldov at the time of this postcard- was a company town,THE BATA TOWN, with street after street of modernist sugar-cube housesand Le Corbusier inspired major buildings. A small version of Zlin is to be found in East Tilbury in Essex, where Vladimir Karfik designed the former hotel there - 1933. onwards and early housing surronding it. |
