edit

I tagged this for license review so that it's good for the future. While XKCD comics are generally published under BY-NC, this specific one is CC-BY-SA. Just below the XKCD logo, it says "For use on Wikipedia, I release this particular comic under a cc-by-sa license." InverseHypercube 00:06, 4 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi
"For use on Wikipedia, I release this particular comic under a cc-by-sa license."
This permission isn't valid. Read about on COM:OTRS, section: Declaration of consent for all enquiries.
Greetings. --Alan Lorenzo (talk) 03:24, 4 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Why is it not valid? He's licensing it explicitly under CC BY-SA, and linking to [1]. Is the problem that he's saying "For use on Wikipedia"? I think he meant it in the sense that "I license this under CC BY-SA so that it can be used on Wikipedia". InverseHypercube 04:12, 4 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Licenses are universal and irrevocables, you can not restrict use to a site. If it's CC-BY-SA is for all sites, all world, no only for Wikipedia. --Alan Lorenzo (talk) 04:28, 4 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I know. I was saying that I think he meant that he was licensing it such that it could be used on Wikipedia, but that the license would also apply elsewhere. I see the ambiguity though. I would not oppose deletion (OTRS is too much of a hassle, and a previous OTRS query with Randall Munroe went unresponded), although I do think you're misinterpreting the statement. I agree with InverseHypercube's interpretation: the wording is not perfect, but I assume that Randall Munroe knows what a CC-BY-SA license means and that he wasn't intending to restrict the use to Wikipedia. Gestumblindi (talk) 00:00, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
This should be clarified by email. The author just need send to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org the explanation with needed license. --Alan Lorenzo (talk) 00:08, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I also agree with InverseHypercube. I don't think this should be clarified by email. Ralgis (talk) 07:31, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ralgis, as you well know, this permission (For use on Wikipedia, ...) isn't valid because it isn't universal. I don't doubt the intention and good faith, but it should be clear by email to OTRS or changing on the web to "I release this particular comic under a cc-by-sa license." without the mention of Wikipedia, using multilicense. The intention is clear, but: If I stick to what is written, on Wikipedia I can use with CC-BY-SA and elsewhere no, CC-BY-NC-SA. Following the rules of Commons and WMF, this is something that should be crystal clear. Greetings, Alan Lorenzo (talk) 19:48, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
