Not Amanita pantherina

This image does not show a member of the taxon Amanita pantherina. You can tell since the suggested taxon does not have stripes on its velum partiale. It is possibly A. excelsa or A. rubescens. Little signs of blushing implies A. excelsa. Still identification of a species possibly harvested for food should be fairly certain. A distinguishing trait on the fruiting body’s base is left invisible on this image, so I would prefer to categorize this image as an unidentified Amanita ssp. It is good to see critical evaluation of the identification of fungus photos in Commons. Looking at the cap surface I immediately thought the mushroom should be Amanita pantherina, but indeed (according to my books) the striation on the ring is an important characteristic and it rules out A. pantherina. So I humbly agree with User:Wkee4ager; it is probably a form of A. excelsa. In any case, if you find a mushroom which looks like this, don't eat it! Strobilomyces (talk) 09:29, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
