The image should either have a North arrow or a notation of some kind to indicate that North is to the right as the picture is now oriented. An alternative would be to rotate the picture 90degrees CCW so that what is now the right side will then be the top side.
North is generally toward the right, as this picture is now oriented. Joe Hepperle
