PNG version

A recent edit^[1] added a {{SupersededPNG}} template; however, no such new version has been uploaded at this time. As a general rule, creating a PNG replacement for a JPG original is a bad idea. Images stored as PNGs employ lossless compression; images stored as JPGs use lossy compression, which discards some of the image data to achieve much higher compression rates than can be achieved with PNGs. Creating a PNG from a JPG gives you the worst of both worlds—JPG image artifacts combined with lossless compression efficiency.
        There are cases where it can make sense to make a PNG version of a JPG original. Repeated cycles of image manipulation followed by JPG conversion can damage image quality, so saving a lossless working copy of an image that has been retouched or color corrected can make sense, even though the original is a JPG. Future manipulation of the image can start with the lossless working copy rather than add another JPG conversion cycle. Because this doesn't appear to be the case and Image:Cheeseburger.png doesn't exist, I've removed the {{SupersededPNG}} template. — VulcanOfWalden (talk) 17:31, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
