Identification

This is an Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis).

Western gray squirrels do not have a black phenotype, only the Eastern Gray squirrel. Eastern gray squirrels are a very common introduced species in the Pacific Northwest (Merilees, W. What characteristics identify this as an w:American Red Squirrel and not a w:Western Gray Squirrel? The ARS is much redder and has ear "tufts", while the WGS is a similar gray and lacks ear tufts. By comparison, the w:Douglas Squirrel also has different coloration and ear tufts. The photograph was taken on the border of w:Chelan County, Washington and w:Okanogan County, Washington, which is within the range for all three species.
