Seems to be rather a lack of consensus as to whether this flag is hoisted on the opposite side and has no emblem on the reverse. Was Santiago Dotor in WS when he spotted that? ¦ Reisio 01:57, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's a good question. Google image search for Western Sahara flag has nearly all the flags hoisted on the left. On the other hand, since Western Sahara is an Arabic-speaking country, it's not surprising if the flag really is "backwards". Like the flag of Iraq. User:dbenbenn 05:42, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Meh. If I ruled the world, all states (real or imagined) would be required to have a high-res photograph & exact SVG of their flag & CoA and explicit instructions of creation & usage online. ¦ Reisio 08:55, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

So, shouldn't this be changed to have the hoist at the left side now? Else, I assume we'd have to change all flags of Arab countries... —Nightstallion (?) 21:43, 16 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, this flag is different from other Arabic flags, because it's not symmetric. Apparently, only one side of the flag has the star and crescent. And apparently, the side with the crescent is the side you see when the hoist is on the right. User:dbenbenn 07:14, 17 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Mh. w:User:Koavf seems to think otherwise, since he's been replacing the svg flag with the png one, which has the hoist on the left. Could you clarify this with him? Thanks! —Nightstallion (?) 11:12, 17 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I didn't actually translated it, but it looks like Image:Parlament SARD 2005.jpg is a photograph of some fairly official flags - both sides are the same. ¦ Reisio 08:27, 17 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

The current image has the label « The obverse side of the flag of Western Sahara. Note that the hoist side is on the right. », which is apparently a holdover from a previous version where that was indeed the case. The label should be changed to the universally correct (obverse/reverse independent) « The red triangle is on the hoist side. » Urhixidur (talk) 15:19, 11 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Flipped image edit

FotW is wrong Look at any book on Western Sahara or just do a Google search of "Flag of Western Sahara." I have never seen this flipped version anywhere except FotW and mirror sites. If you want one of many sources, check here or here Koavf 19:45, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wrong, Please Correct edit

Flags of Morocco and the SADR over Western Sahara map. Bad at the south and other areas ar conrolled by Mauretania on the Thin Red Line, etc.

Neutral Flag of Western Sahara

Western Sahara is an area under dispute with Morocco and SADR, The currently flag is SADR flag, WS don't have flag.

  • This has been with purpose and presents a clear abuse of Wikipedia for pro-polisario activits propaganda.
  • However, further to a neutral point of view, both, Western Sahra and "SADR" are two diferent things
  • The "SADR" is an exiled republic or government which is based in Algeria and which claims Western Sahara
  • Western Sahra is the disputed territory.
  • The flag, coat of arms etc apply to the first one, the "SADR". Western Sahara as disputed territory has no flag and such things.
  • It is mostly administrated by Morocco. In this sense the flag that is effectively and mostly used for Western Sahara would be rather the Moroccan one.
  • But this would not be neutral as a neutral point of view does not recognise the sovereignty of Morocco nor the so called "SADR" (position of the UN or the European Union for instance).
  • Morocco is however recognised as the administrating power in the territory.
  • Sadly this is not the case in Wikipedia. Western Sahara is widely presented as a country, a state etc..

The Flag of SADR must be here: (Image:Flag of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.svg)

see: Flag of Western Sahara. The flag must be UN flag or deleted soon.

Tetouancity 17:06, 21 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Right The flag of the UN is not the flag of Western Sahara. You can't claim that the territory doesn't have a flag and that this is its flag; that is self-contradictory nonsense. This is basically a proxy for an argument that should be going on at w:Talk:Flag of Western Sahara. Koavf 17:24, 21 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
So you want say that "Sahrawi Republic" Flag is the flag of western sahara? I think you are taking it personal. This huge mistake must be corrected. Tetouancity 17:41, 21 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Flag of X That flag was created to be the flag of the territory that comprises Western Sahara. Furthermore, it is used as a flag of the Sahrawi Republic, the Polisario Front, and the Front Polisario Khat al-Shahid (possibly among others), so renaming it to one of those entities is arbitrary and not in keeping with every other "Flag of X" image and article. Koavf 18:38, 21 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Wrong! The flag was designed by Polisario in 1976 to refere to the "Sahrawi Republic" and not Western Sahara (area in dispute), see: Flag of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
Wrong It was created in 1973, prior to decolonization. Koavf 22:20, 21 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't care if you think it colonization or not, the UN is still trying to resolve this problem, so don't anticipate this and make the "Sahrawi Republic" flag as a flag of Western Sahara, and I think you know all that Tetouancity 22:26, 21 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
What? Your response was complete nonsense; please explain. Koavf 22:28, 21 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't know which will be the final solution of this image... but you have created a problem in all Wikipedias where the flag of the SADR should appear. I will revert to the flag of the SADR... if you have problems with that, you could change the file to Image:Flag of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, run a bot over all Wikipedias changing the files (just like what happened with Image:Ulster banner.svg) and delete this file or put a blank image (I don't see why the UN flag is the flag of Western Sahara). --B1mbo 17:08, 9 March 2008 (UTC) :Stop it This has been brought up countless times and the consensus is always to leave it as it is; do not change the file without consensus. Posting a glib threat on talk doesn't count. Koavf 17:40, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

My apologies I see "Xiquet" is making these ridiculous edits here and on en.wp (and probably ar.wp as well.) Koavf 17:42, 9 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Agree with B1mbo, The UN don't reconise the SADR claim on Western Sahara, making SADR flag as an official flag of the territory using sock puppets to vote is propaganda and won't accomplish anything on the actual situation of the territory, the solution is to separate the two flag as it's on Wp. --Isno 10:37, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

If there are two separate filenames for the same image, you'll have people fighting about which one to use on hundreds of different pages across many wikis. As it is, most of the fighting is centralized here. It's also more work to maintain two files over one. ¦ Reisio 17:38, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Agree with separating the two files: As WS is the name of a disputed territory (don't have flag), I suggest updating this image to a flag similiar to this one image:Flag of None.svg and to upload the SADR flag on a separated file with the right name. This is the only way to resolve this problem, WS flag mustn't refer to Morocco neither SADR --Xiquet 18:42, 9 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
As I said before; we have tried that before and the SADR image keeps on getting removed from here. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 21:50, 9 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Proposal

There must be some sort of name this can be moved to which will satisfy everyone. Can there be no compromise? It's a name. I'm not suggesting, mind you, that one side does not have a legitimate gripe. Patstuart (talk) 14:26, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

There isn't, don't delude yourself. We'll just have to settle for satisfying Commons guidelines, which has already been done. ¦ Reisio 23:15, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
There is no one name that we can pick, unlike in (lets say) the Laincourt Rocks. The only way I can see this ever being solved is having this file at two names, but I have seen the Flag of SADR.svg image deleted many times, causing the circular debate. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:08, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
How about Western Sahara-SADR? Or SADR-Western Sahara? I think it's completely workable. Patstuart (talk) 16:44, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Then there will be a pissing match to find out what name goes in front. I also been told the areas are not really the same, but this was explained to me on en.wp. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:53, 28 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Let's try. Xiquet: please answer two questions. A) would you be able to accept this compromise, and b) if so, would you be willing to have SADR on the backside? I'm afraid that if you answer no to a, there will be no compromise. Patstuart (talk) 18:47, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Western Sahara Targui Heritage WarriorReply

Can we start a new deletion request? --Xiquet (talk) 14:33, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Of course — consensus is not permanent. I doubt any sane admin will ever delete this file, however. ¦ Reisio (talk) 21:38, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Western Tuareg Heritage Warrior.Reply
Another proposal before starting a new deletion request

As the territory is disputed between Morocco/SADR, I suggest making the flag showed above (Flag of Morocco/SADR) as a flag of the territory. --Xiquet (talk) 02:29, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Naming conventions and common sense simply supersede any inclination to alter this file from its current state. Morocco rejects anything but 'southern provinces' and their own flag, so this name should be irrelevant to all except those actively anti-SADR, and the name 'flag of Western Sahara' sort of predates the SADR, AIUI. You wouldn't place my user page at User:MagicalMuffin, because my user name is Reisio. You wouldn't place the Peter the Great article at Bob the Magnificent. This flag is simply most well known to the English world as 'of Western Sahara', and there is no getting around it. ¦ Reisio (talk) 06:08, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
The UN never considered this flag as a flag of the territory, it's known as 'of SADR'. Just because pro-SADR websites are mistaken doesn't mean Wikipedia has to follow. --Xiquet (talk) 10:28, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi Xiquet. ¦ Reisio (talk) 00:14, 21 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Can you explain? As i see in The World Factbook there's no flag showed for Western Sahara [1]. --41.248.8.79 12:02, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Colours update edit

I would like to update the colours of this flag based on some images. I have uploaded an updated file and ask it be merged onto this file. My update file is File:Flag of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (update).svg Fry1989 eh? 04:41, 1 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

General update edit

Hello, can someone update the SADR flag file according to this officially sanctioned flag work? Thanks!--HCPUNXKID (talk) 17:21, 8 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I am going to have to decline. From what I had the Spanish translated, it was artwork that was donated to the government and used by supporters, but there has been no official change of the 1x2 ratio. It is not a government document. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:51, 9 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
I dont know whats the problem, its a work on behalf of the SADR delegation in Madrid, so as long as the Spanish SADR delegation is part of the official diplomatic SADR net, its an official SADR work. Regards, --HCPUNXKID (talk) 22:22, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
The work was donated to the SADR Government and her people, along with supporters of the state. This is not a work by the state. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 23:07, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Plus the authorship is an art studio who does a lot of graphics for socialist movements and other groups. Politics aside, this is not a government body but a private company/person. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 23:08, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Its obvious that if was a job supervised by SADR Madrid delegation (part of the SADR, so logically, part of the state) and given then to the SADR, it was given to be used, as its obvious. For other part, Im still waiting for any type of proof or evidence that the 1:2 version of the SADR flag is an official one design. I repeat proof or evidence, not generalities like "its the most common used". WP is an encyclopedia, not a popularity challenge...--HCPUNXKID (talk) 16:58, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

That was me as the IP; I wasn't able to get a computer until now. The document is referenced at http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/eh.html#des. I do see the quote where it says it was "urged" by the Madrid Office of the SADR Government, but just a lot of things do not make sense. It was a part of an identity manual, for which this website posts a lot about. But I have not found out anything that says the ratio has been changed, officially.
