The identity of people in this photograph edit
The identity of people in this photograph is unclear. A color postcard which is the same as this photo doesn't identify anyone by name, and is simply titled 'Darjeeling, group of Lamas.' Considering the mystic carried by the Dalai Lama, it is unlikely that he is not identified in some way on a postcard if he was in the photo. Tibetologist Emma Martin's essay Translating Tibet in the Borderlands: Networks, Dictionaries, and Knowledge Production in Himalayan Hill Stations only identifies Sherab Gyatso in the photo. She said the photo is taken 1890-1900, so 13th Dalai Lama was unlikely to be in the photo, since there was no record of the 13th Dalai Lama in Darjeeling by 1900. A dissertation claims the King of Sikkim is the one in white, and the 13th Dalai Lama is the one sitting on the left. This is the only somewhat reliable source that identifies the 13th Dalai Lama and King of Sikkim. Looking at existing photo of these two people, I doubt if that's the case.
