This is a photo of Wi maihi Maniapoto, Not Rewi Maniapoto aka Rewi Whiu. Rewi Maniapoto gifted his kakahu to an englishman, in “resolution” to the integration of māori and the settlers, and in māori tradition this kakahu was to be gifted back once the person who received the koha had passed away. This didn’t happen straight away as the next generation who was gifted the koha tried to sell the kakahu in an auction. This oversight on history, culture and tradition was leapfrogged with the realisation of lucrative antiquity and quick acquisition, but was remediated by both parties and had the kakahu returned home to its rightful place. The reasoning for this tikanga or tradition was to reconnect relationships and perpetuate the mana through humanitarian successes with the same generations connected to that mana. This tradition was projected in mainstream media as an arbitrary notion and a primitive excuse to regain the kakahu on baseless superstition. This is not the case when the original concept is to balance tapu between different ideals and societies to eliminate social fractures so we live in unity with your own ideals, perspectives and opinions working together as one.And one of the parties forgot or either didn’t care?
