[15] 12:38, 23 February 2009 User:Takeaway nam jeem = a dipping sauce, not a soup

Are you sure this is a soup? A "Namchim" (also transliterated as "nam chim", "nam jim" or "nam jeem") is a spicy dipping sauce. Or maybe you are mean it to be "Kanom Cheen" which means "Chinese noodles"? In this case it would be "Kanom Cheen Pesat" which is Chinese noodles with "Pesat" sauce.Takeaway (talk) 12:40, 23 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Could you please correct it, as User:Mattes has certain problems with the Thai language ;-)
It would also be nice, if you could add the name in thai script. Thx. --hdamm (talk) 14:09, 17 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
The problem with this dish is that neither my Thai friends, nor me, have any idea what it is. It could be a dipping sauce (for grilled meat for example) but as it is presented in this picture together with noodles and the raw vegetables and herbs (which are normally used in the noodle dish) it might also be the "soupy-sauce" for pouring over the noodles. And then of course it isn't a dipping sauce any more. "Pesat" means "devil" and it probably is an invention of the cook who made this. It is not one of the "standard" well known sauces or soups, at least not by name. But it does look very spicy and tasty indeed!
Maybe the maker of this picture, user Mattes, could tell us how this sauce was eaten/used? as that would indicate the correct name for it. Was it a hot soup or was it used cold?Takeaway (talk) 05:37, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
According to my government^^, it's a cold non-spicy sauce with bit of sugar, nuts, eggs, onions, garlic etc. "Präh sat" is the main dish for it (whatever that is, my wife couldn't explain it to me due to language difficulties). --Mattes (talk) 13:20, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
LOL, your government seems very nice! Ok, that it is eaten cold does mean that it is a dipping sauce (nam jim). I'll ask around what "präh sat" could be.Takeaway (talk) 15:42, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK --Mattes (talk) 17:25, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I asked one of my friends about the "Präh Sat" but he still can't imagine what this dish actually is. Here he is himself to write in Thai and ask your government what it is: คุณพี่ผู้หญิงครับ...อยากทราบว่าเมนูนี้เรียกเป็นภาษาไทยว่าอย่างไร น้ำจิ้มนี้ส่วนใหญ่กินกับอะไรครับ ถ้าเป็นไปได้อยากทราบด้วยว่ามีต้นตำรับมาจากภูมิภาคใดของประเทศไทยครับ ขอบคุณครับ Takeaway (talk) 06:41, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

fish or fish dish named Pae cha pashonn
Hmm, we don't have a Thai keyboard otherwise that we would know more. The fish pitured is a "Pae cha pashonn" from rivers or lakes and is a typical dish for that dip. Also a fish or fish-based food named "Patchon" (no pic) is typical to go with that dip. I forgot to tell that chives, eggs and sugar is also included. Hope that was useful, at least we now know the meaning Pesat (file name)... Gotta go, --Mattes (talk) 08:01, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hallo Mattes. Keine faulen Ausreden ;-)
--hdamm (talk) 08:20, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hallo, danke für den Hinweis. Mal probieren lassen. --Mattes (talk) 09:58, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Okay, my friend now knows what it is. It is indeed a dipping sauce for fish called "Nam Jim Paesak" (น้ำจิ้มแป๊ะซะ) and it's apparently well known in the Isan part of Thailand. A bite size piece of steamed fish (for instance Pla Chon (snakehead fish) but any fresh water fish is okay) is put in some raw vegetable (like a lettuce or cabbage leaf) together with fresh "Pak Chi" (coriander). The sauce is dripped on top of this bite size helping and then eaten. Well, at least we now know what it is! :)) Takeaway (talk) 17:49, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Takeaway: I would transcribe "your" Thai script as "Nam Jim Paesa" (no final k!) according to en:Royal Thai General System of Transcription (or in IPA: /nám ʤîm pǽsáʡ/) --hdamm (talk) 07:43, 25 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hdamm: Using the official Thai transcription system is fine with me. I only used the "k" as a hard ending, not really to be spoken out as a "k" although it is probable that Westerners would pronounce the word in a more correct way while pronouncing the "k" than without. :) Takeaway (talk) 09:06, 25 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
