File talk:Opuntiaschottii.jpg

On 2014, august the 20th, I change the identification of this plant. It was identified by sign as Opuntia schottii. Opuntia schottii (syn.: Corynopuntia schottii) is a very different plant, with clavate stems and real long spines. This one have flat stems, thinner at the top than at the base, which is typical of the Tunilla group, a group of small Opuntias from Argentina (also for some plants from Chile and Bolivia). With all these small spines, the plant on the photo clearly look like Opuntia hintonii. Opuntia hintonii is a nomen nudum (which means a name that was not validly published) attached to a plant that have been commercially offered without exact origin. It is probably a form of Tunilla corrugata, with a very particular spination, but it will need to flower to make a positive identification. I never saw this plant in flower. By the way hintonii itself is a strange name as Hinton is an amateur botanist who live in Mexico, and who, to my knowledge, never visit Argentina, while this plant is clearly from Argentina.
