Some suggestions

edit

As the topic of the pre-1797 historical flag of San Marino is a bit complicated, and still at this time hypothetical, I suggest these interventions on this file:

1) Vertical display - sources suggest a use connected to military action, so it is rational to suggest a

2) 2011 updated reconstruction - to avoid confusion, it is better to follow the 2011 new reconstruction by historian Verter Casali. I created a separated entry for the traditional reconstruction by Carlo Malagola

3) no CoA - we still can't say for sure what Coat of Arms was used in the middle of the white stripe, if any. Considering Malagola himself fails to indicate a characteristic, it is better to not put a CoA at all to avoid misinformation. TheFlagandAnthemGuy (talk) 16:20, 30 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

everything very hypothetical

edit
  • we only know that there was a flag made for San Marino in 1465, in Firenze
  • we know this from the source cited in Malagola, which is a series of receipts for the making of this flag
  • these are receipts and therefore do NOT include a description of the flag in any way
  • they mainly enumerate the amounts of differently coloured clothes (taffeta) for the flag; the colours mentioned are four
  • thus it is highly dubious when Malagola "reconstructs" a tricolour flag from four colours, basically "forgetting" the quantitatively main colour ("grana" = some kind of red)
  • there is also no hint of what was painted on the flag; I personally would suggest that it was not the coat of arms, mainly because of the rather high price paid for the painting to Lo Scheggia, rather an image of Saint Marinus
  • we do not have any knowledge about any other flags of San Marino until (at least) 1797
    • but we can neither assume that this standard of 1465 was the first flag of San Marino
    • nor that it was THE flag (either in the sense of the only flag or in the sense of GENERIC design for a city flag)
    • nor that it was used (more or less unaltered) until 1797
