Ulster Banner

edit

This file is correctly titled as the Ulster Banner it was never the flag of Northern Ireland, it is the former governmental banner of the former Government of Northern Ireland used between 1953 and 1972 when that government was suspended and then dissolved in 1973 under the Northern Ireland Constitution Act 1973.--Padraig3uk 00:15, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Note that this editor proclaims to be a member of Sinn Fein- a political party linked to terrorism. He can't be trusted to be neutral in matters relating to Northern Ireland. 86.158.71.43 13:20, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nice to see it didn't take long for the personal attacks to starts, not that its any of your business, but I am not nor have I been a member of any political party in the past twenty years. Wikipedia is mean't to be an Encycopedia that presents facts, not a political soapbox for POV pushers. See:
This shows what are the National Flags of each nation within the UK, England, Scotland and Wales all have recognised National Flags, Northern Ireland Dosen't except the Union Flag.--Padraig3uk 14:01, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

It isn't a personal attack, merely an observation base don your own contributions to the Commons. Sinn Fein members of course dont recognise Northern Ireland and its flag. 86.158.71.43 14:11, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

So in your opinion, because another editor wants to correct errors in Wikipedia or remove false information then you think you can label them as being involved in a political agenda, your comment above clearly shows your own agenda. My contributions are based on fact supported by RS sources provided by the British Government and their Constitutional department. So onless you can provide a source to contradict that, please refrain from personal attacks, and edit warring.--Padraig3uk 14:18, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Your contributions are based on your own political viewpoint, backed up by your own admission to being a member of this Sinn Fein, which when I checked is linked with terrorist groups. It's like a member of the Nazi party removing facts about the Holocaust and saying he is neutral. 86.158.71.43 14:26, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Your behaviour is clearly showing that you are editing with a agenda, you are trying to removed sourced material that dosen't suit your own POV. So may I suggest you provided sources to support your viewpoint.--Padraig3uk 14:33, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
There is no reference to the term in that PDF document you linked to. Perhaps they use that name in Sinn Fien, I don't know, but Commons does not follow Irish political parties or their linked terrorist groups. 86.158.71.43 14:36, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
See: W:Ulster Banner and W:Northern Ireland flag issue.--Padraig3uk 14:40, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Reference to what term ?. The link makes clear the Ulster Banner is not the Flag of Northern Ireland, and that the only flag of Northern Ireland is the Union Flag.--Padraig3uk 14:51, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

There is no term Ulster Banner in that PDF file so it cant be used as that basis to rename a whole article. Many articles in the German and French Wikipedias link to it and use that term and not a made up one. 86.158.71.43 14:53, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Then the links on the German and French Wikipedias are in need of correction then, and the name of the Banner is the Ulster Banner it was never the Flag of Northern Ireland not even during the period 1953-72 when it was used to represent the former Government of Northern Ireland it didn't have any civic status then either, and the Union Flag was then as it is today the only official flag of Northern Ireland.--Padraig3uk 15:00, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Has this flag ever been the official banner of Ulster? --Boivie 05:37, 30 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

The devolved Northern Ireland Government between 1922-1972 was granted to right to have a banner/flag to represent the government under the Act that partitioned Ireland, the Northern Ireland Government took up this right in 1953, hence the Ulster banner which was used to represent the Government of Northern Ireland until 1972.
In 1972 that Government and its Parliament was suspended and direct rule was restore to Westminster, in 1973 the Parliament and Government of Northern Ireland was dissolved under the W:Northern Ireland Constitution Act 1973, this also meant the trappings of the former government cease to officially exist, which included the Coat of Arms and Banner, etc as is traditional under British Constitutional tradition.
The Ulster Banner was never a civic or National flag at any time, with the Union Flag being the Official flag of Northern Ireland then as it is today.--Padraig3uk 07:57, 30 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
If this flag never have been the official banner of Ulster, I'd say the other name is better. This flag has been used as a symbol for Northern Ireland in different circumstances, for exampel for the Northern Ireland football team, so the name "Flag of Northern Ireland" makes sense, even if it hasn't been the "official" flag. --Boivie 21:33, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Boivie, why would the other name be better, the flag is called the Ulster Banner, it was never the flag of Northern Ireland, and the fact that it is used is some sports dosen't make it the flag of northern Ireland, many other flags are used in sport in northern Ireland as well. Wikipedia should present factual WP:RS information.--Padraig3uk 21:58, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

The fact is that this flag is and was the flag of Northern Ireland. The name "Ulster Banner" was the name given to the flag when and as it appeared in the Royal Coat of Arms. When removed from that environment it became the flag of Northern Ireland.

The Union Jack is not the flag of Northern Ireland. The Union Jack is the flag of the United Kingdom as a whole. It would be ambiguous to use the Union Jack to represent Northern Ireland and also unnecessary as it already has a flag. --86.153.35.156 04:53, 9 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
