File talk:Vukan's Gospel, miniature.jpg

This image was wrongly described. This is not an image of St. John, even though it might be the first page in John's Gospel. This is an image of Jesus.

The iconography of the picture makes this clear.

  • Only the figure of Jesus has a halo with a cross in it.
  • The right hand of the figure gives the blessing. In a Gospel book, this is generally a sign that the figure is Jesus. In icons, this is also shown for saints who were priests.
  • There are other early pics of Jesus without a beard.
  • If the figure was John, he would almost certainly have his symbols- a book and an eagle, and possibly a cup with a snake in it.

The description has been altered, but is still not correct. It now reads that the image is "held by some" to be the Evangelist. The point is, no informed opinion would hold that this was the Evangelist. It cannot be anyone other than Christ, because only Jesus has this halo. Mandy 05:50, 27 May 2008 (UTC).... OK, I checked it out on a website about Serbian culture. They definitely refer to the pic as John the Evangelist. I can only presume one of the following:Reply
  1. that the painter knew nothing about iconography
  2. that the writer of the article knew nothing about iconography
  3. that the writer of the article had simply presumed it was John, and hadn't bothered to look for the clues in the image itself.
