Hilye

artwork depicting the appearance of character of Muhammad

A hilye (Turkish; plural: hilyeler) or hilya (Arabic) is a calligraphic panel, often used as a wall decoration, containing a description of the prophet Muhammad's physical appearance based on the hadith. Hilyeler leave picturing the prophet's appearance to the reader's imagination, in line with the aniconic nature of Islamic art.
