Portraits in Icones Imperatorum Romanorum (1645)

This page contains a gallery of the imperial portraits in the 1645 edition of the Icones Imperatorum Romanorum, a 16th-century numismatic work and the first major work on the coins of Roman emperors. The portraits, based on Roman and German coins, depict Roman and then Byzantine emperors from Julius Caesar in 48 BC to Irene in 803, and then the Holy Roman emperors from Charlemagne in 800 to the then incumbent emperor, Ferdinand III. The portraits are numbered in the original work, counting a total of 160 emperors, though some portraits are blank, apparently due to the lack of source material availble to the original artist. The names and enumerations used below follow the Icones Imperatorum Romanorum, not modern historiography.
