Recipients of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called (ongoing stamp series)
Recipients of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called is an ongoing series of stamps issued by the Russian Post. The series is devoted to persons honoured with the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle the First-Called, the highest civilian and military award of the Russian Federation. The stamp series started in 2011, as of 24 October 2014 ten stamps of the series were issued; in 2015 and 2016 the stamps of the series were not issued. The series will continue.
The recent Russian Order of St. Andrew is considered as the re-established order of the same name existed in the Russian Empire in 1698–1917. The imperial order was re-instated as an award of the Russian Federation by the Decree of the President No 757 on 1 June 1998.
The Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called is awarded to prominent statesmen and public figures, eminent representatives of science, culture, the arts and various industries for exceptional services, for promoting the prosperity, grandeur and glory of Russia.
The Order may also be awarded to foreign heads of states for outstanding service to the Russian Federation.
As of 24 October 2014 there have been 16 awards of the Order of St. Andrew to 16 persons. Twice the award was presented to foreign citizens: President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev. One of the recipients, the writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, refused the award.
