Version at-a-glance
Ver 4c -- Commons & wikipedia --
c.) Only change version saved on Wikipedia, re-added shortened version table in mid-edit on wikikpedia and merged that with operative code from the commons adjustments. Then re-exported to the Commons so back in synch. Neither use the /doc page method for overt usage now.
b.) Update imbedded template name 'catlst' to new use as 'catlist' (for/in error messages) also bypassed {/doc} page and much of this table's older data.
Document the full swap between this template and template:catlst Page, which were swapped in their entirety (Content for content) so calling templates would have mnemonically matching names for the desired display mode with bullets. That edit here
a.) Exported Iterim version of template to Wikipedia after beginning as per 'b.' above also there, picking up changes between the 4th-7th as well. (Original commons annotation in full version table below)
Usage solely about {{catlist}}
Note the entire contents of this page swapped with {{Catlst}} 7 July 2008, and belatedly input to here 9 July 2008. Swap here incorporates the earlier changes made in the commons version 4-7 July, including making this a </span> ... </span> template, so can begin on the same line as other messages. // FrankB 20:56, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
In order of the string built, parameters occur Once only, save for {{{SISTER}}}:
{{{PRE}}} {{{LABEL}}}{{{POST}}} <!-- the list of "{{{SISTER}}} prefixed" categories --> {{{END}}}

{{{CALLED BY}}} occurs only in error messages. (This template is usually called by others which act
                as "front ends" defining all these parameters and providing the input lists.

Active parameters if used directly:
{{{ PRE|}}}   <!-- for HTML format effects like <b> --->
{{{ LABEL|Categories:}}} <-- logic selects "category:" if only one given
{{{ POST|}}} <!-- for HTML format effects like </b> or <i> <br/> and so forth, key to flexible display modes
              ---- always occurs "After" {{{LABEL}}}, but "before" the list of categories

So each output begins: {{{PRE}}}{{{LABEL}}}{{{SISTER}}} <-- the list as below, AND ends... --->{{{END}}},

In List elements parts, these combine as: [[{{{ SISTER|:}}}Category: {{{ 1}}}|{{{ 1}}}]]
              and etc. for rest of list -->

{{{CALLEDBY}}} is set in the calling template, so correct error messages are generated.

{{{ END|}}} <!-- Any HTML format effects like </b> or </i>, last field out in string --->
