This baseline diagram has been vastly improved, corrected, and brought up to date in a much better diagram (which is used in the English version of the Space Elevator article):

An even better diagram is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Space_elevator_structural_diagram--corrected_for_scale%2BCM%2Betc--regenerated_as_SVG.svg. It's not yet on commons, but it should be soon (as of 29 July 2014).

This older "stubby" version with the asteroid for a counterweight and incorrectly located center-of-mass should be replaced with language-translated derivatives of the corrected version as soon as practicable.
