Note: This template is used on a lot of pages. In order not to put too much load on the servers, edits should be kept to a bare minimum. Please discuss proposed changes on the talk page first.

Afterwards, changes can initially be done at and tested with Template:Taken on/sandbox.

Editing a template causes all pages that use the template to be re-rendered. If the template is used often, this can put a lot of load on the servers since it fills up the job queue.
Keep in mind that templates that are used on file description pages also show up on other wikis.
This page is template-protected from editing to prevent vandalism. Only template editors and administrators can edit it. Get their attention by placing {{Edit protected}} at the talk page.

When the exact date of media creation is known, this template renders the words "Taken on" in the language specified in the user's preference followed by the date. The template automatically adds a "taken on" category using the exact date. If the exact date is not known, use the {{Taken in}} template. The English language distinguishes between the two terms: a photograph is "taken on" an exact day, date, or week, but is "taken in" a longer period of time, e.g., a week, month, season, year, or longer.

This template is generally used in the "date" parameter of the {{Information}} template.

The template automatically sets the following categories: corresponding subcategory of

Category:Photographs by date for image files (the template supresses the time and categorizes by date only). It doesn't distinguish photographs from paintings, drawings, graphics and other image files.
Category:Videos by year and Category:Days by day for video files
Category:Audio files by year and Category:Days by day for audio files
Category:Texts by year and Category:Days by day for text files

The file type is detected with {{File type}}. The categorization can be supressed with parameter cat=no (appropriate when the file is manually moved to any subcategory of the default target category, e.g. a country-specific subcategory).
