Template talk:NARA-Author

The link has some issues. When I first click on external link I get Timeout message only after I "start a new session by pressing the ARC search button", return to the image page and click the link again, then it works fine. Is there some way to avid this problem? --Jarekt (talk) 17:04, 22 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

That's interesting. This has never happened to me when clicking a link to other records. If it keeps happening, it may be a bug and I can ask about it. It'll probably be next week before there is an answer. Dominic (talk) 18:52, 22 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I just tried it again and apparently my 30 min session expired, so the link does not work for me again. --Jarekt (talk) 18:58, 22 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
This is fixed now. :-) Dominic (talk) 13:31, 11 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Creator templates

edit

I'm not sure if this is what you had in mind, but see my last edit. If we create redirects from the NARA contributor IDs like Creator:1332556 then it would nicely provide the Creator templates for those that exist or the bare name and ARC links for those that don't. Dominic (talk) 01:05, 23 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

That is one way to do it. Another would be something similar to Template:Fotothek-Creator:
{{#switch:{{{2|void}}
  |1332556 = {{Creator:Ansel Adams}}
  ........................
  |void    = {{unknown|author}}}
  |default = {{{1}}} ([http://arcweb.archives.gov/arc/action/ExecuteRelatedPeopleSearch?id={{{2}}}&relationship=AD_CONTRIBUTOR NARA record])
}}

Where we build a lookup table directly into the template. --Jarekt (talk) 01:40, 23 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

That would be the cleanest option. Would it actually work with a thousand, or several thousand, authors? Dominic (talk) 21:13, 24 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I doubt there will be such large overlap between NARA authors and commons creators. And I think we can handle 100s - 1000s I am not so sure. Also we can always run a bot to replace some NARA author templates with creators. --Jarekt (talk) 03:20, 25 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think that those with a creator should eventually be substituted. As long as the creator template provides the ARC link, it looks better than an using {{NARA-author}} (more standard and avoids trailing NARA link)--Zolo (talk) 17:31, 7 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

This template points to https://research.archives.gov/person/<ID>, which seems to be outdated and to have a certificate issue. At least when I try to open https://research.archives.gov in Firefox, I get "Did Not Connect: Potential Security Issue", and the detailed error message says that Firefox "does not trust this site because it uses a certificate that is not valid for research.archives.gov. The certificate is only valid for legacy.catalog.archives.gov".

It looks like links and IDs need to be updated: for example, the page for "Knudsen, Robert L. (Robert LeRoy), 1929-1989", which used to be at https://research.archives.gov/person/8451337 (archive seems to be empty, unfortunately), is now at https://legacy.catalog.archives.gov/id/10610540.

Return to "NARA-Author" page.
