what do we call ourselvesEdit

I realise this was copied directly from Wikipedia, but it's a bit of a stretch to automatically call a Commons user a Wikipedia user, don't you think? :)

But what can we call ourselves? Commonsians?

--pfctdayelise 03:26, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

A Wikimedia user, or Wikimedian perhaps? Actually this probably needs to be asked on the Village pump, because I doubt many other people are watching this page. -- Solipsist 08:50, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
I just did that.--Mac Wanter 02:59, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Problem with two word usernamesEdit

Hi, when the welcom message came up on my user talk page it correctly read my username for the Hello and welcome part, but read it wrong for the gallery part. I've looked at the code to spot the problem but couldn't find it. Maybe someone else can? /Lokal Profil 21:34, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
The problem seems to be that external links don't support spaces (for good reason) and that {{PAGENAME}} brings down the name with spaces. If there is a simmilar command to {{PAGENAME}} which brings down the pagename with underscores that would solve the problem.
I realise that this problem is quickly worked around by the user (with some wikiknowledge), but since this is the welcome message for people who are potentially completly new to Wikimedia I think that its importent that it works. /Lokal Profil 23:22, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your note, I didn't realise that problem existed. {{{PAGENAMEE}}} will insert an underscore instead of a space in multi-word page names, so I changed it to that and it should work now. Although I think they have turned on the extra tabs for everyone now, so you should already have some tabs at the top that say "gallery", "orphans", "untagged"... right? :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:49, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks works now, and yes the new tags were just turned on. =) /Lokal Profil 12:24, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

OK, with our WelcomeBot implemented, I really want to reform this to maximise its usefulness and relevance. What do n00bs not know? Licensing, deletion guidelines, must categorise. They seem to be the three things I notice the most. With the welcome log (see previous link) implemented, we can start to analyse what newbies seem to know, what they need to know, and what they don't. So I'm just warning y'all... I plan to make some big changes to this template if necessary. pfctdayelise (translate?) 17:13, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Add ...Edit

\"and indicate your Graphics abilities\" Yug (talk) 18:46, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm confused. "Precise" is not a verb. pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:55, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

I think Yug meant "préciser vos compétences graphiques" which I'd translate as "indicate your graphical abilities/ your image-editing abilities"/, préciser meaning to indicate exactly. But I'm translating from one not-native language to another, so I might be wrong. NielsF 01:59, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I mean "Indicate". Thanks for the help, I did a mistake of translation. >.O Yug (talk) 19:37, 2 September 2006 (UTC) you have taken Jan-San(2016) (talk) 16:38, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

Line breaks at the end break signaturesEdit

Could someone remove the extra linebreaks from the end of this template? They cause {{welcome}} ~~~~ to be rendered as the template ending with a line break, with the following line containing the signature preceded by a space, which causes the signature to be rendered in monotype in a grey box. (Please, when making changes to templates, always check the effects of your changes on pages that use them.) LX (talk, contribs) 20:44, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

soviet coat of arms of soviet union 1946Edit

Hello, could you please realiser the embleme of the union sovietique of 1946 with the finoise language(tongue) besides the derniere version thanking you in advance good day thank you

Third version (1946-1956)

The state coat of arms of the Soviet Union, between 1946 and 1956The number of republics in the USSR became 16 shortly before the Great Patriotic War, but the coat of arms was changed to reflect this only after the war. By a Decision of Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 26, 1946, all 16 constituent republics were represented on the coat of arms. The USSR State Motto was inscribed on 16 ribbons in 16 languages (Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Moldavian, Finnish languages were added to the previous version). Inscriptions in Azerbaijani, Turkmen, Uzbek, Tajik, Kazakh, Kyrgyz languages were updated due to the transfer from the Latin alphabet to Cyrillic alphabet of respective republics. thank you --Dunkerqueenflandre (talk) 10:14, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Link to "Image" pageEdit

Just a little pick about the wording on the template, but shouldn't this now by "file", using "image" may confuse users into thinking that the "image" and "file" namespaces are seperate?--ADtalk 12:40, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Autotranslate this oneEdit

Maybe it's time we should autotranslate this template too. Any objections? Multichill (talk) 01:03, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

It is used many times, it would be very helpfull to users to translate it, so they do not have to know English to read it. Romaine (talk) 01:07, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
The template now uses Autotranslate. --Slomox (talk) 00:44, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

edit requestEdit

The first line currently reads, "Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, !". The exclamation point directly after the comma is grammatically incorrect, unless I'm missing something. –Juliancolton | Talk 04:36, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

When the template is included in a user page, it reads "Welcome to Wikimedia Commons, username!". At least it should, have you seen a case where it didn't? --rimshottalk 06:07, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
See User talk:Cynwolfe for an example. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:07, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
That's weird. My interface language is Portuguese, and viewing this template the username (in this case, the page name, that is, "Welcome") does show up. However, if I try, the page title doesn't appear between the comma and the exclamation point... I have no idea what could be causing this, but I'm guessing the error must be in {{Welcome/en}} or {{Autotranslate}}. --Waldir talk 16:10, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Portuguese uses {{PAGENAME}} for the name, while English and German, which both don't work, use {{{1|{{BASEPAGENAME}}}}}. Someone more familiar with the wiki syntax might find out why this doesn't work. --rimshottalk 16:23, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, that helped to trim down the error. It stems from the fact that when you specify a parameter, even if you don't pass any value to it, it is considered as a variable that has been set, so the {{{1|}}} construct in the English and German versions doesn't use the part to the right of the pipe, which is reserved for the default value, when the parameter is not passed. A workaround is to use the {{#if:}} function, as in:
That returns false if the parameter {{{1}}} is an empty string, even if it has been set. This would fix the template, but someone more savvy might be able to simplify or minimize the above markup (or both). Meanwhile, I'll check whether there's a bug report in MediaWiki to make the construct behave like this and second it, as it would greatly simplify many templates. --Waldir talk 17:20, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Update: I added a comment to bug 4708. --Waldir talk 17:39, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
I fixed it for en:, de:, and some others. Many of the languages don't use autotranslate at all so far, they should be updated. --Slomox (talk) 18:41, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Looks like {{Editprotected}} is not needed anymore at the moment. Multichill (talk) 12:46, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Bullets are brokenEdit

The welcome tells users upload image again if he/she uploaded file with at wrong name. Now that images can be moved should we not change the text to instruct uploaders to use {{Rename}}?

If we want to make sure the rename is handled quick we could make a "speedy move" or somthing that is only allowed to use by uploaders and only if added within 24 hours. --MGA73 (talk) 12:38, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Remove non-working language linksEdit

I would like to propose to remove non-working language links from this template. For many years now language links do not work, as clicking on them does not get you to that language version of the template. They were removed from majority of license templates. Unless there are some good reasons to keep them, I would like to remove them from {{Welcome}} as well. --Jarekt (talk) 13:08, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

All of the ones I tested work just fine. Which are the ones that are not working? LX (talk, contribs) 17:17, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
Not a single one works for me. For example go to User talk:Jsappe and click on any language links. For me nothing happens if I do so. --Jarekt (talk) 17:54, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
Works for me in both Firefox and Chromium, both logged in with Monobook skin and logged out with Vector, so it's probably something specific to your browser or user configuration. Make sure you have JavaScript enabled and check your console for errors. In any case: please don't remove any links. LX (talk, contribs) 21:53, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Switch to use {{Welcome/i18n}}Edit

User:Tacsipacsi just managed to convert {{Welcome}} to use Translate extension at {{Welcome/i18n}}, with occasional admin help from me. If everything works well than the last step will be removal of the unused pages. Lets wait a few days to make sure it works and than I can try to delete the old pages. User:Tacsipacsi thank you for driving this effort. --Jarekt (talk) 03:24, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

@Jarekt: I created many “translations” in Occitan (oc) by mistake in English. Could you delete all translation units except the first and the last? Then it will show the real state of translation. Thanks, --Tacsipacsi (talk) 11:39, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
It seems to be OK now, so why delete intermediate steps? --Jarekt (talk) 02:33, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
Because I wrote the wrong language. :) The really wrong (I hope) is the Ossetic (os). These are not intermediate steps, these are non-translated translation subpages. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 15:28, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
@Jarekt:(edit request) I am wondering if this can be added somewhere in the template? Oh... By the way: Thanks to both of you for chaining to TA extension, it was on my todo list. But had no time yet :) --Steinsplitter (talk) 12:30, 2 January 2016 (UTC)
I like but can we move the text of the individual messages to Commons, so the community here can correct, improve and add to the ideas? I found some misspellings and could not fix them. Also can we localize the messages and maybe move it tool labs if possible. I hope I am not proposing to many very hard "improvements". --Jarekt (talk) 02:42, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
The text can be edited here, but i can move that to commons. The i18n can be added when the other stuff is fix and stable :-). It is hosted on pl wikimedia toolserver - as far i know tools labs does not allow using own domains. Maybe this is the wrong place to add, if you know a better one let me know :-) --Steinsplitter (talk) 09:34, 3 January 2016 (UTC)

@Jarekt: You said a few days. I think a couple of days left. Can you merge the translation? (The non-translated “translations” are still not deleted.) --Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:46, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Tacsipacsi, Thanks for reminding me. I often forget old projects when new arrive. It seems a lot of pages link to subtemplates of {{Welcome}}, so I will need to fix that first. --Jarekt (talk) 14:27, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

This is the talk page for discussing improvements to the contents of the template {{Welcome}}. If you can identify the message that gave you the impression that this page would be the appropriate place for your question, so that we can clarify that message, it would be helpful. A more appropriate venue would have been Commons:Help desk.
You can upload pictures and other media to Commons by following the instructions in the first steps guide. There is no prize for uploading content to Commons in general, but there are often one or more photo challenges, picture of the year contests and "Wiki Loves" contests going on, each of which will have individual rules and in some cases prizes; see the specific challenge or contest pages for details.
