This page was used to document investigations of a display problem. Finally it was used to prepare a bug report to Apple. --Hasenläufer 11:00, 25 November 2017 (UTC)

Initial situation edit

After an update from macOS Sierra to macOS High Sierra in November 2017 I observed black rectangles instead of images, in Safari and Preview.

Sample images edit

The preview sample images shown here are shown to me as black rectangles.

"ICC: " means, the image has an embedded ICC profile, the name of the embedded ICC profile follows.

Web browser edit

The problem is observed with Safari 11.0.1, the currently latest version. In part, not only thumbnails are affected, but also full formats of the images. I can observe the problem under the following OS/browser combination:

I could NOT observe the problem with other web browsers (at macOS High Sierra 10.13.1) like Google Chrome 62.0.3202.94, Mozilla Firefox 57.0 and Opera 49.0.2725.39.

MediaWiki and other websites edit

First, I've seen the problems on MediaWiki instances. Therefore my first assumption was, the problem might be caused by the MediaWiki software. To investigative this assumption, I installed the sample images on another MediaWiki instance (German website), running under a different MediaWiki version (1.28.0). There are not identical, but similar problems. Therefore my conclusion is, the problem is not related to different versions of MediaWiki.

The problem can also be observed on other websites. Samples:

My conclusion is, the problem is neither related to MediaWiki, WordPress nor any other website technology.

Preview-App edit

Similar problem: When I download the sample images in full size and look at them all together in the macOS own Preview, miniatures are displayed in the sidebar. In the main window, the actual preview shows no problem – but in the thumbnails in the sidebar. A screenshot I upoladed here.

Installations lately edit

On November 1, 2017, I upgraded Safari to version 11.0.1. Six days later I performed an update of the operating system: from macOS Sierra to macOS High Sierra.

ICC profiles edit

Using "System Preferences" → "Displays" → "Color" and changing between different display profiles results in unpredictable changes. So far I could not find any systematic logic.

Hardware and other reports edit

My used hardware model is "Mac mini (Mid 2011), i5-2415M, Intel HD Graphics 3000".

Similar reports from other users (1, 2, 3) on discussions.apple.com are related to the same model or to "Mac mini Server (Mid 2011)". Along with other reports, the problem appears to occur only with processors with an integrated graphics processing unit of type "Intel HD Graphics 3000".

According to Models with Intel HD Graphics 3000 on support.apple.com these Mac models might be concerned:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011)
  • MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2011)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)
  • MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011)
  • MacBook Air (11-inch Mid 2011)
  • MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2011)
  • Mac mini (Mid 2011)
  • Mac mini Server (Mid 2011)

Safe mode edit

The problem does NOT occur when the Mac starts in safe mode. Once booted in "safe mode" does not fix the problem on subsequent boots in "normal mode".

Preliminary conclusions edit

  1. The problem seems to be related to the operating system "macOS High Sierra".
  2. Only some image files are affected, most not.
  3. The problem is limited to grayscale images.
  4. It affects Safari and Preview. Maybe other (macOS) apps are concerned too. Thumbnails from Finder do not seem to be affected.
  5. Macs using CPUs with integrated "Intel HD Graphics 3000" seem to be affected.

Bug report edit

To help to solve the problem, I submitted a bug report to Apple on https://bugreport.apple.com.

Here is an EtreCheck report of my local configuration.
