On November 26, 1911 an agreement was reached to build the new line. In January 1912 a route had been surveyed and pipe was thus ordered. The first sections arrived on April 19, 1912 at the Los Angeles end of the line and at the Midway field on May 1st. Three spreads worked on the line concurrently, the first going from the Los Angeles terminal towards the mountain range. The second from the Midway oil field towards the mountains and the third across the mountains. It was necessary to build 43 miles of road across the mountains. The line of 112 miles had an outer diameter of 12.75 inches and could stand 450psi. A telephone line was laid in parallel. Every 10 to 12 miles a patrolman lived with his family.[1]
