El Tofo edit
Originally planned was to have Swedish and Norwegian shipping companies operate newly built 17,500dwt ore carriers (able to carry 15,000 tons of ore). These ships were to be 520 feet long, 65 feet beam and projected to deliver 7 loads totaling 100,000 tons per year by 1917. The steamship Epsom with the very first shipment of ore sailed from Cruz Grande April 22, through the Magellan strait, and arrived in Philadelphia June 7, 1914.[2] On this occasion it was announced that Bethlehem had arranged with European shipowners to bring 750,000 tons of ore from El Tofo over the next two years to fill the gap until the new fleet of ore carriers was available.[3]
El Tofo was in operation until 1957. Over its lifetime it produced 48 million tons of ore.[4]
Romeral edit
Shipments from Romeral began in December 1955.[5]
