Inmaterial cultural heritage from Perú to the wolrd

Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photographic competition to enjoy and celebrate the cultural diversity around the World through Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons). Everybody can participate.

This year, Peru participates again, and in this emergency context, you are encouraged to stay at home and submit any photos, from your personal collection, of inmaterial culture in Peru between 1 and 28 February. By submitting your photos to the competition, you share your inmaterial culture heritage with the rest of the world to enjoy through the internet. We will explain below how to participate, what you can win and what monument sites are eligible. There are dozens of other countries that you can participate in, please check out the international website.

The contest in Peru is organized by Wikimedistas de Perú.

Why participate?

Participate in Wiki Loves Monuments, the largest photography competition in the world, and help Wikipedia document monuments and heritage buildings.

Participating is fun! By sharing your images of heritage, you can explore more about Peru heritage and learn about it. It's a nice challenge to improve wikipedia articles with your photography skills, and you can of course win some nice prizes. The national jury will select up to 10 images that will represent Peru in the international finale. These images will compete for the international awards. More information about the international competition is available on www.wikilovesmonuments.org .

This year, by the Covid-19 pandemic, we encourage you to stay at home and upload images that you may have taken already during one of your travels to Peru. The old pictures, taken till 1977, participate in a special category. Check if your travel destination participates in Wiki Loves Monuments this year.

If you want to participate in the diffusion of the contest, we have a space with press releases and other materials for communication.

Competition rules

We try to keep the competition clean and simple to participate. There are only a few rules for photos to participate in the contest in Peru. Let's quickly go through them. Every submission should be:

  • Self taken and self uploaded;
  • Uploaded during October 2021;
  • During the upload process, you give permission with a CC BY-SA license to re-use the image;
  • Contain a listed monument, which you have identified using the monument identifier (see elsewhere on this page);

Next to that, there are a few practical rules:

  • You should have an activated e-mail address on Wikimedia Commons;
  • If the photo gets deleted for any reason, it is automatically disqualified from the competition;
  • You are responsible for following the law while taking and uploading the photo.

In October, you may upload as many pictures (old or new) as you want of monuments that you have visited. At the end of the month, the national jury will evaluate the photographs and select the best 10 pictures of the monuments in Peru to submit to represent in the international finale. The international jury will then announce the international winners in December.

Prizes

The top ten contributors (by number of photographs) will receive a surprise prize.
All participants will be awarded a certificate of contribution.
Winners of the international competition will be awarded photography related prizes.

More information about the monuments of Peru

A list of monuments by department can be found in our section of monuments in Peru.

The Jury

Our jury will process the images through two or three rounds during October. At the end of this process, the jury determines the top-10. If there are any doubts about the implementation of the rules, the jury decides. Our jury will be composed of people with experience in art, photography, history and historical preservation.

Judging criteria

The jury will determine the winners of the international contest taking into the consideration the following criteria (in no particular order):

  • Technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.);
  • Originality;
  • Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia.

Images that reach a top ranking of the international finale, will typically at least fulfill the technical criteria of the ‘Featured Image’ process at Wikimedia Commons. But feel free to submit many images, and let the jury be concerned if they are good enough.
