Abbasid flagEdit

Black was the dynastic color of the Abbasids, so there's no problem with representing the Abbasids by a plain black banner (File:Black flag.svg or equivalent). However, the image File:Abbasid flag.png had a lot of other stuff on it (not just a plain black banner), and there was no historical evidence for this other stuff, and the image was frequently being added to Wikipedia articles, which created an undesirable situation... WLM 2013 mapEdit

I'm sorry! I never realized my mistakes with Egypt. I've always used an image that I had saved on my PC, then whenever I uploaded a new version, Egypt did not appear. Sorry again. -- Yiyi (talk) 21:58, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

Wiki Loves MonumentsEdit

Hello, Welcome to Wiki Loves Monuments! I saw you are organizing Wiki Loves Monuments for monuments in Syria. It is short term, but it is still possible to set it up. I personally am in charge of the technical infrastructure for Wiki Loves Monuments, part of the international team. I just created some of the basic structure for Syria, but some things are missing. In short:

If you need any help, you can contact us via the talk page, mailing list or chat (access webchat)

Greetings - Romaine (talk) 13:23, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. Actually, I am not 'technically' the organizer, but I am only supporting the competition and taking care of the online job.
I have translated the template, however, we don't have a website yet. I will try to create one for both Jordan and Syria in the few upcoming days.
Actually, monuments are a big problem in most of the participating Arab countries, as the concept of 'monuments' is missing in the first place in most of the region. I have made a lot of online research for both Jordan and Syria, but I found only few lists of archaeological sites (Lodewijk told me that they can possibly be enough), as well as an interactive online map, broken and not working, for cultural sites. In Jordan, we are trying now to get an offline list of the cultural monuments, instead of the broken online map, but it seems that this gonna take some time. In Syria, I have asked the main volunteer organizer to ask for a list from the ministry of culture (no online lists), she's trying now to get one, and we will set up the on wiki-lists as soon as it is available.
Thank you again for the help, and I will ask if we need anything. Regards --aad_Dira (talk) 16:43, 18 August 2013 (UTC).
The website must be ready in two weeks, the sooner the better. When the website is online, please add it to the table of websites.
For Jordan I did found monument lists on Wikipedia: ar:ملحق:قائمة آثار محافظة العقبة. Those lists need to be converted from wikitable into template tables. Iw wrote a comment about it on Commons talk:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in Jordan. I think this need to be done before the end of this month.
Let me know if you have questions, or when the websites and lists are ready. Romaine (talk) 17:36, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
Updates: All lists of Jordan had been converted to templates and unique IDs are added, check here.
Still working on getting an offline list for Syria, it seems that we will be able to get one in few days, and we will start working on wiki lists as soon as possible.
Website for Syria is created and almost ready, I will create another one for Jordan soon. Technical question; will you provide us a host for the website (since all websites are under 'Wikilovesmonuments"), or we have to host it by ourselves?
Thank you --aad_Dira (talk) 15:20, 19 August 2013 (UTC).
Very good work! The lists of Jordan are perfect!
Each country hosts its own website. Most used (and preferred) are wikilovesmonuments.tld, but we accept also other domain names. If a country isn't able to set up a site, we also accepted in the past years (and will accept) a wiki page dedicated to this with instructions, rules, jury, link to campaign, etc.
Another suggestion, one which has no hurry: you have set up these lists for Jordan which are really perfect now, and you probably would do that for Syria as well. I can only speak for myself, but I think there is some kind of language gap between Arabic and non-Arabic countries with Wiki Loves Monuments. Even while the members of the international team which organizes Wiki Loves Monuments are coming from across the world from various countries, none of us speaks Arabic and it is difficult for us to understand the language. However, Arabic is a major language spoken in many countries in the world, a whole region speaks it, so it is a pity if only a few countries can participate. I think it would be very nice to have someone on the Arabic Wikipedia who can help all countries set up lists of monuments so that they all can participate next year. You know how to set up lists, I hope you are willing to promote Wiki Loves Monuments also for other Arabic countries on the Arabic Wikipedia. You can always ask me for help with this, but someone who speaks Arabic is easier for the communication on the Arabic Wikipedia. Are you willing to help us with doing this the coming 12 months? Romaine (talk) 16:22, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
Ok, we will host it, no problem, I just preferred to be sure about it.
For the other point, I would be absolutely happy to introduce any help I can. Actually, I was already trying to invite as many Arab contributors as possible to organize the contest in their countries, this how Syria joined as well as some Egyptian and Algerian organizers. And I still like to make any further help possible --aad_Dira (talk) 13:36, 21 August 2013 (UTC).

Hi, I saw your message on my talk page. A colleague in the international team pointed to me that we miss on the landing page of Syria basic information about Wiki Loves Monuments, like, how to find lists, rules, etc. Can you make sure that is added as soon as possible. See for example the landing page for Jordan or Algeria. Please do this within 24 hours, we really want Syria in as soon as possible. Romaine (talk) 21:01, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi. I have created the page in a quite similar way to that of Jordan. If anything still needed, please tell me --aad_Dira (talk) 23:05, 9 September 2013 (UTC).
Ok, Syria is now fully ready! Romaine (talk) 04:39, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
That's great! Thank you :) --aad_Dira (talk) 07:11, 13 September 2013 (UTC).

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thank you for your concern. I am happy there is someone like you in this depressing community, where people are seemingly remembering the great purpose of the wiki movement less and less. As for your suggestion, I am happy to say that I have already informed the Arabic community about the situation here, and we are now planning to migrate all files related to our region into our local wiki permanently --Abbad (talk) 07:21, 12 January 2017 (UTC).

Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in LevantEdit

Hi Abbad, As Effeietsanders already explained, for each of the four countries of the Levant there needs to be an upload link, as each country has a different monument list and on Commons different templates. Therefore I updated your landing page. One thing you must do is update the Arabic labels of the upload buttons by adding the country in the labels, which I did for English and French myself already.

I also would suggest to improve your landing page to make it a bit more attractive visually by adopting some parts from this example landing page: Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments/Documentation/Example landing page. If you have any questions, please ask! Romaine (talk) 13:35, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

@Romaine: Hey Romaine! Thanks for this. I was just creating a landing page on Arabic Wikipedia with proper links (it'll make things far easier for participants since we have a right-to-left alignment, unlike the case here on Commons) --Abbad (talk) 13:40, 31 August 2018 (UTC).
Excellent! It seems indeed a good idea to have a page on the Arabic Wikipedia. Please make sure you add a link from the Arabic page to the Commons page and a link from the Commons page to the page on Arabic Wikipedia, in this way also people that are less good in Arabic in the Levant can find how to upload. Can you let me know when the Arabic page is ready? Thanks! Romaine (talk) 13:51, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
@Romaine: It seems you've already seen it :) Thanks for fixing the links, I had a hard time making them right without the Commons template. I think both the landing pages are all set now --Abbad (talk) 09:15, 1 September 2018 (UTC).

Invitation to Organize Wiki Loves Love 2019Edit

Wiki Loves Love (WLL) is an International photography competition of Wikimedia Commons to subject love testimonials happening in the month of February 2019.

The primary goal of the competition is to document love testimonials through human cultural diversity such as monuments, ceremonies, snapshot of tender gesture, and miscellaneous objects used as symbol of love; to illustrate articles in the worldwide free encyclopedia Wikipedia, and other Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) projects. February is around the corner and Wiki Loves Love team invites you to organize and promote WLL19 in your country and join hands with us to celebrate love and document it on Wikimedia Commons. The theme of 2019 is Festivals, ceremonies and celebrations of love.

To organize Wiki Loves Love in your region, sign up at WLL Organizers page. You can also simply support and spread love by helping us translate the commons page in your local language which is open for translation.

The contest starts runs from 1-28 February 2019. Independent from if there is a local contest organised in your country, you can help by making the photo contest Wiki Loves Love more accessible and available to more people in the world by translating the upload wizard, templates and pages to your local language. See for an overview of templates/pages to be translated at our Translations page.

Imagine...The sum of all love!
