Coats of arms of Catholic dioceses of the U.S.Edit

Thanks for taking this on. I did Austin a while ago, then ran out of steam... Dallas is on Wikipedia (en:File:Diocese of Dallas Coat of Arms.svg), and could be moved to Commons. AnonMoos (talk) 21:02, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Just moved Dallas; thanks for the tip. I just started teaching myself how to use Inkscape, so my skills are a bit limited. Nonetheless, I hope to make some significant progress in this project. Alekjds 21:24, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Hope you don't mind my overwriting File:Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore.svg, but there were little white notches in the red area... AnonMoos (talk) 15:31, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

No, not in the slightest. In fact, if you notice anything else like that in the future I would be very grateful for your help in correcting it. I am still a bit sloppy with the software. Thanks. Alekjds 15:33, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Did a similar fix for the unwanted white dots in File:Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington.svg, but it would be quite a bit of work for me to attempt to do anything about the fact that the lines separating the cross from the blue background are quite a bit thicker than the other cross lines. To avoid the unwanted white problem, you need to up the "miterlimit" for the lines enclosing the cross bottony (but I have no idea how that can be done within Inkscape) -- I changed it from 4 to 15, which seemed to be enough... AnonMoos (talk) 15:50, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. I have no idea how to do that in Inkscape either, so time to do some more reading, I guess. Alekjds 16:03, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
I don't actually use Inkscape to edit SVG files (only to test and convert SVG files), so no matter how rudimentary your Inkscape skills, you soon surpassed me... SFriendly.gif -- AnonMoos (talk) 16:17, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Boy, your energy and perseverance are astonishing! I've been trying to add the coat of arms images to the corresponding Italian Wikipedia diocese pages, and am falling behind you in even doing that. Believe me, however much you may feel yourself to be a beginner in Inkscape, there are a lot of SVG coat of arms images on Commons that look worse than yours. When you do Austin, feel free to make use of my image, but preferably don't overwrite it -- its name includes "shield", and so is suitable to an image that includes the shield only... AnonMoos (talk) 07:41, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

All that energy is a direct result of being unemployed for the summer, so I'm glad it's all going to a good cause. I may take a bit of a breather now that I've finished all the archdioceses, but I'll see how I feel about doing a few suffragan dioceses tomorrow. (I will be sure not to overwrite the Dallas image.) Thanks for the encouragement. Alekjds 07:47, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

6/30Edit

Actually, it's User:Magog the Ogre who wants your updated version of File:Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas.svg and the version originally-uploaded to en.wikipedia to be separate files, while I was requesting that if you do Austin, it be under a separate file name. P.S. Grouping the files into a category has made it noticeable that File:Diocese_of_Kansas_City_St_Joseph.svg and File:Diocese_of_Raleigh.svg are lacking "Roman Catholic" at the beginning of their names... AnonMoos (talk) 09:51, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

All duly noted. (Doesn't really matter to me if the Dallas image is separate; it might be better that way, really.) Alekjds 17:28, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

File:Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity badge.svgEdit

Interesting symbol -- have you seen File:0000 Holy Trinity .JPG / File:Petropolis Holy Trinity circles symbol stained-glass window.jpg ? I once wanted to do a somewhat similar "language-neutral" version of the Shield of the Trinity diagram, but could never really find appropriate freely-licensed pre-drawn vector symbols that would work that well together... AnonMoos (talk) 07:34, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Shield of the Trinity diagram - language-neutral concept.svg
Interesting stained glass there—a very similar concept to the S.O.L.T. badge for sure. I would be curious to see how a language-neutral Trinity shield would look. I assume you would be using images instead of words in the joints, but how would you signify the est/non est in the arms? Alekjds 07:39, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Here's what I have so far, newly-converted to SVG: File:Shield of the Trinity diagram - language-neutral concept.svg . I was thinking of putting a hand emerging from a cloud in the top left circle, a descending dove in the top right circle, and an Agnus Dei in the bottom circle, but I could never really find available suitable depictions that individually look good, and are also stylistically compatible with each other... AnonMoos (talk) 09:20, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

By the way, image http://images-mediawiki-sites.thefullwiki.org/10/2/5/2/72430782462692514.gif at least doesn't actually use the Borromean rings, but a different structure in which each ring is directly linked to each of the other two rings... AnonMoos (talk) 07:46, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Well, I have no idea how to model anything like that in Inkscape. I went with what was closest. Alekjds 07:53, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Non-Borromean linkings are included as part of File:Lord Warden Cinque Ports (Lord Boyce).svg and File:Suchy-coat of arms.svg, but I'm not sure that they're exactly the same as what's in the GIF image... AnonMoos (talk) 09:39, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
Fixed.... AnonMoos (talk) 21:00, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

Escudos de armas eclesiásticosEdit

Hola Alekjds

Alekjds 21:19, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

"Standard colors": white/greyEdit

Unfortunately, people who see grey instead of expected white in heraldic computer images are very likely to wonder why they're "dirty". It's nice if you want to show silver, but the fact is that no area of simple constant flat color on a computer screen can look silvery (shiny, metallic, reflective) on its own -- it takes much more elaborate graphic techniques to give a true metallic appearance. In the past, there have been lengthy and acrimonious disputes about replacing white with various shades of grey in the flag of Italy, the flag and national emblems of Poland etc., and in the end File:Flag of Italy.svg and File:Flag of Poland.svg still use pure white. It would probably be best to avoid the whole heraldic-"argent"-shown-as-grey-attempting-to-be-silver-but-failing thing... AnonMoos (talk) 00:52, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

I personally agree with you, but since the English Heraldry WP lacks a standard color pallet, I just bit the bullet and went with the Spanish conventions. I am the sort of person who likes a rule book. Alekjds 01:03, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

file retweakingsEdit

The way to prevent the necessity for this is to take the most-recently-uploaded version of a file as the basis for your further edits... AnonMoos (talk) 03:10, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

I've made a point of doing that this time. Alekjds 03:13, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

File:Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston–Houston.svgEdit

Some might prefer the old version, because in the current version they're on a rigid rectangular grid (which isn't really the meaning of "semy"...) -- AnonMoos (talk) 03:45, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

File:Charles Chaput Archbishop of Philadelphia COA.svgEdit

Why not http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arcbishoppallium.png|200px or http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ArchbishopPallium_PioM.svg|200px ? 201.21.37.30 19:54, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

I wasn't sure if it was heraldrically correct to include it, since Chaput has not yet received his pallium as Archbishop of Philadelphia. ("The metropolitan is obliged to request the pallium, a symbol of the power that, in communion with the Church of Rome, he possesses over his ecclesiastical province. This holds even if he had the pallium in another metropolitan see.") — AJDS talk 01:45, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

File:Santo Spirito in Sassia.svgEdit

It's connected somehow to en:Order of the Holy Ghost (see Category:Hospitallers_of_the_Holy_Spirit), though I don't understand the details, and I'm not sure whether it would be appropriate to add the category... AnonMoos (talk) 03:41, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

I think it's related enough to add the image to the category. The use of that particular cross in the coat of arms implies a significant connection. — AJDS talk 03:48, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Coat of arms of Harry EntwistleEdit

On 20th February 2013, Fr Harry Entwistle was appointed a Protonotary Apostolic supernumerary. Hence the external ornaments of his personal coat of arms has been altered and are now : a violet galero with twelve red fiocchi.

I cannot do the modification on your file File:Father Entwistle of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross.svg

Father Entwistle of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross.svg
