Welcome! edit

Good to see you over in this neck of the woods! I guess you popped over here for the same reason I did: User:BoomBoomPow / User:IWannaHaveFergie'sBa / User:Nimbley6 ;-)

(Heh, just realised you have far more contribs over here than me, so "welcome" is maybe a little wrong, but good to see a friendly face, anyway!)

Why not? I don't see any reason for the category to have been emptied in the first place. "Actresses in England" is not a parent category of "Actresses from the United Kingdom borm in YYYY" so no need to remove it from categories and images. Same goes for actors. Autopatrol given edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. odder (talk) 12:33, 23 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi there, two photos of yours are nominated for deletion at Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Couple_outside_my_window_(4904452799).jpg. You may be interested in looking, as it will likely affect your other photos which you have kindly made available under a free licence. The X Factor world map.png edit

Hi, I noticed the map was not up to date, so I decided to make some corrections. As far as the upcoming versions are concerned, we could decide which version is likely to begin or is already begun (Israel, I think) and painting it dark blue scrapping from the map upcoming version scheduled for 2014 (Vietnam). What do you think about?--Carnby (talk) 09:39, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I put the following countries in green since I was not sure the version had already started:
  • Portugal;
  • Slovakia;
  • Turkey;
  • Israel;
  • Japan;
  • Vietnam (scheduled for 2014);
  • Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Macedonia (joint version).
Should I put the first five in dark blue, Vietnam in grey (or dark blue?) and the Balkan countries in light blue?--Carnby (talk) 14:38, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I have uploaded a nev version of the map following your suggestions; I have added a blue dot for Okinawa.--Carnby (talk) 11:01, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thankee edit

I uploaded a picture of yours from Flickr [File:Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher plaque.jpg], do let me know if I did it wrong or I incorrectly attributed it. Such great photos of Hampstead, I really want to add more of them! Gareth E Kegg (talk) 22:09, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

That's fine. I semi-regularly search Commons for any photos that have been uploaded from my Flickr, so if I need to do cleanups of image descriptions (so they're more Commons appropriate) or change categories, then I'll do it then. I always change my Flickr name to my Commons signature too, so people on here can contact me on here if they find one of my photos and want to contact me, so don't worry about how the attribution is displayed either. Just feel free to upload any of my other photos and I'll change anything like that later. AnemoneProjectors (talk) (Flickr) 22:25, 30 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'd like to use one of your photos for a commercial project, but I have no idea how to contact you. I can offer credit and a printed copy. Do you have a website or email address? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Season1980 (talk • contribs) 02:32, 03 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Season1980: Hi, you should be free to use the image for a commercial project per its creative commons licence, unless it's not on Wikipedia Commons and I've used a different licence. I don't have a website other than my Flickr page, but you can email me through this site using the "Email this user" link which should be displayed somewhere on this page, perhaps under "tools". Strange fishy sculptures / Liquidity edit

I don't mind if you want to rename it. I suppose the text associated with the file should contain words that people searching for it might possibly use. The current title seems to me to identify the picture unambiguously, which seems enough to me. JMiall (talk) 17:01, 27 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

I'm not bothered really, but a lot of my photos get uploaded with the "GOC [whatever]" name, which is usually unrelated to the subject of the photo, it's just the walk I was on at the time. So that's usually the part I see and think "I wish they'd changed that when it was upoaded to Commons". But it's not a huge deal. I'm glad to know what the sculpture is now. AnemoneProjectors (talk) (Flickr) 18:16, 27 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid not, not even in the photos I took but didn't upload to Flickr. I don't recall seeing any other sculpture that day, and having just looked it up online, it's not at all familiar. Sorry! AnemoneProjectors (talk) (Flickr) 21:01, 27 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

A you going to move over 1 265 200 files? Wieralee (talk) 11:52, 21 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

No, I'm just trying to revert the ones you moved over with Cat-a-lot, but couldn't find a way to do it other than manually. I redirected Category:Uploaded by user Fæ to Category:Images uploaded by Fæ and shouldn't have done, so your actions were basically my mistake. But fewer than 200 files were affected and I've very nearly finished. AnemoneProjectors (talk) (Flickr) 18:35, 21 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
By the way, the user hasn't duplicated them, but a bot created Category:Uploaded by user Fæ, which actually User:Fæ doesn't want. I noticed the category and redirected it, which effectively meant Fæ's files got placed in a parent category where Fæ didn't want them. Which is why I'm doing what I'm doing. AnemoneProjectors (talk) (Flickr) 18:39, 21 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Wieralee: Thank you for rolling back the remaining ones! I think it is now all done, I don't think any other users did what you had done. AnemoneProjectors (talk) (Flickr) 18:50, 21 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

British listed buildings photos edit

Hello, I created [[Category:Photos from British Listed Buildings]] (similar to the Geograph images categories) so that all of the photos are grouped together in case they need to be found quickly. As far as I can tell, you are the only other person to upload photos from British Listed Buildings. Was it a good idea for me to create a category for the photos? There were only four photos from British Listed Buildings that I could find on Wikimedia Commons, are there any others? Pjposullivan (talk) 04:19, 17 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Pjposullivan: Oh hello. That seems a good idea to me, yes. I can see two that I uploaded from there in the category, I don't think I've uploaded any others, and I don't know of any others. AnemoneProjectors - Peter O'Connor (talk; Flickr) 10:41, 22 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open! edit

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear AnemoneProjectors,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

My opinion: it's preferable to cut a person in half who is not really part of the image than to not have the subject in the centre, and your crop put more emphasis on the man in the background. AnemoneProjectors (talk) 00:54, 3 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Are you a fan of Jane Austen? edit

Are you a fan of Jane Austen?

If you are a fan of Jane Austen you've probably read her most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice, or seen one of the movies adapted from it. Austen is known for rarely giving detailed descriptions, or landscapes, or of people, for that matter.

In Pride and Prejudice the hero, Elizabeth Bennet, in known for taking long walks, in Hertfordshire, including to the top of Oakham Mount. I think it is safe to assume that Oakham Mount, the highest bit of land near Meryton, is as fictional as Meryton.

Nevertheless, I recently googled for images of the geography of Hertfordshire, and learned of the chalk scarps that run through northern Hertfordshire, and neighbouring counties. I figure that, if Oakham Mount were real, it would be a chalk scarp.

The big scarp, near Toronto, where I live, is the Niagara Escarpment - the scarp that forms Niagara Falls.

I am not a geography expert. But, since you lead nature hikes in the region, maybe you are. The Niagara Escarpment turns north, at the western edge of Lake Ontario, and forms most of a circle, across Lake Huron's Bruce Peninsular and Manitoulin Island, before curving down the Door Peninsula on the western edge of Lake Michigan. The center of the State of Michigan lies in a big syncline. And the steep edge of scarp faces out.

I looked at a bunch of maps and diagrams of the Chiltern Hills. Am I correct that the steep edge of the Escarpment is the northern edge?

For the Niagara Escarpment, if you approach the edge from the lower ground below the steep edge, it looks quite steep. But the steepness is completely unnoticeable, until you get close to the edge, if you approach from the upper side. Are the Chiltern Hills like that?

The upper layer of the Niagara Escarpment is Dolomite, a relatively hard sedimentary rock. And it is bedrock, all the way down.

But, some of the sources confused me, seeming to imply that the top, Chalk layer of the Chiltern Hills lies atop clay. Those sites are confusing, right? Under the chalk layer it is bedrock all the way down, correct?

Thanks for your help! Geo Swan (talk) 07:44, 8 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Geo Swan. Well that is a lot to answer, I'll try my best. First of all I will say I have never read or seen any movied adated from Pride and Prejudice, so I don't know anything about it.
I can confirm that Oakham Mount is not a place in Hertfordshire or apparently anywhere in the UK. My end of the Chilterns runs through the town of Luton in Bedfordshire and up towards the town of Hitchin in Hertfordshire. There are some locally famous hills in this area, most of which are within Bedfordshire. They include Deacon HIll/Pegsdon Hills, Barton Hills, Sharpenhoe Clappers and Sundon Hills, which are all on the northern edge of the Chilterns rainge. You will also find Blow's Down and Dunstable Downs on the northern edge, to the south of Luton and Dunstable, and Warden Hill and Galley Hill which appear to not really be at the edge but slightly further south. So yes the steep edge is the northern edge, to the south I guess it is more gradual all the way down to London and the River Thames. There are other hilly areas that are in Hertfordshire and connected to the Chilterns but I can't say I know them that well, for example looking at the Ordnance Survey map on streetmap.co.uk I can see hills around the village of Great Offley. These are not as accessible as the other places. There is also Ivinghoe Hills in Buckinghamshire but that isn't far from Dunstable Downs. So Oakham Mount could really be anywhere, especially if there are no detailed descriptions. Perhaps you will want to look up photos of these places to see what you think.
You also asked "Are the Chiltern Hills like that?". I would indeed say that they are, as you described. I don't know much about the geology of the region though so you'll just have to trust any sources you can find.
I hope this helps in some way. AnemoneProjectors (talk) 16:36, 10 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • That is helpful. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
  • Several people have catalogued, and rated the three dozen(!) or so adaptations. The two most popular are a 1995 BBC miniseries, starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, and a visually stunning 2005 movie, starring Kiera Knightley. A lovely youtuber compares the two here.
