Hello, AustralianRupert!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Autopatrol given edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Bidgee (talk) 09:26, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Takes the Australian War Memorial edit

Hi. You're invited to Wikipedia Takes the Australian War Memorial on 25 August at the Australian War Memorial. --LauraHale (talk) 00:26, 30 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Laura. I'd love to attend, but the distance might preclude that from happening. I'm currently based in Adelaide, although I did spent two years at one of Canberra's educational institutions (Duntroon) a few years back. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 10:29, 31 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

CommonsHelper edit

Have You managed to solve the issue with CommonsHelper. I have the same difficulty when working from the Russian Wikipedia. Thank you. --Gandvik (talk) 12:56, 20 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

G'day, yes it seems to have resolved itself on en Wiki, but I'm not sure what was done to fix it, sorry. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 13:18, 20 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

File:US Marines at Talasea on New Britain 1944 (USMC-M-NBrit-p159).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

This message was added automatically by MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner), if you need some help about it, please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the   ->Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner) 05:34, 18 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Lossless cropping on images edit

When cropping out watermarks of images sourced from Australian War Memorial, info banner should be cropped with tools that support lossless cropping such as IrfanView or CropTool. This is to avoid unnecessary compression artifacts that occur always when re-saving jpg as jpg. Example here: File:13th Field Regiment at Cairns 1944 (AWM image 085204).JPG

--Kesäperuna (talk) 12:02, 14 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

G'day, I'm sorry but I don't really see the difference in the two images. Can you please provide a link to the tools that you are referring to? Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 12:09, 14 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hey, perhaps that was bad example of quality loss but technically it's still there. With Irfanview you can just select image area you want to keep and click options and Lossless JPG Crop... To use CropTool you can add it to your Wikimedia Commons "Tools" section here. Keep in mind that with some images you can't do lossless crop without cropping too much of image or too little, this is because lossless cropping just deletes wanted JPEG blocks witch consists of 8x8 pixels. Luckily this is not an issue with most of images on AWM image library. I hope this helps. --Kesäperuna (talk) 19:43, 14 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
G'day, I had a go at using the CropTool, for instance with this file: File:Hospital ship MANUNDA in Sydney Harbour, 17th August 1940 (cropped).jpg and File:AWM 027023 Pack horses and mules being led along the first stage of the track from Ower's Corner.jpg. Have I used it correctly? Is there a way to use it to upload in the first instance, or is it necessary to upload the uncropped image first, and then use the tool to crop it? Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 00:21, 15 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hey, On File:Hospital ship MANUNDA in Sydney Harbour, 17th August 1940 (cropped).jpg you used it correctly in lossless mode and in File:AWM 027023 Pack horses and mules being led along the first stage of the track from Ower's Corner.jpg you used it in "precise mode". When using it you can select between "precise mode" and "lossless" mode as you can see here. Sadly with CropTool you have to upload uncropped first and then crop it, that is the reason why I personally use Irfanview when I upload new images and CropTool when image is already uploaded but not cropped. There are also other tools listed on here. --Kesäperuna (talk) 08:29, 15 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for taking a look. I'm not really keen to download an external tool, so I will have to stick with CropTool. Out of curiosity, is there a visible difference in the outcomes when "precise" mode is selected over "lossless"? The outcomes of both look pretty much the same to me as when I use Microsoft Paint or some other editing tool offline on my laptop, but I assume there must be some difference that I'm not seeing. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 01:09, 16 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hello. Difference between compression artifacts on "lossless" mode and others become more apparent with more contrast pictures and multiple saving cycles. In my experience MS Paint is pretty bad because it does not allow changing compression quality. I would prefer "lossless" over "precise" when possible as precise mode has to compress it again making it "second generation copy". "precise" mode still does better than paint I would say, "lossless" > "precise" > others. If you have access to other offline tools that allow changing jpg quality to 100% then I would recommend using that instead of MS Paint. --Kesäperuna (talk) 12:04, 16 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
No worries, thanks for that. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 00:49, 17 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Australian Soldiers Capturing Jaghbub Image Issue edit

Australian Rupert, I was wondering if you could provide or find the source of where the photo came from so it can be given credit. I am thinking of using this photo in a future update to the Jaghbub wikipedia article, but don't want to risk copyright issues until this is fixed. If you don't know where it came from, could you at least guide me to where you found it? Thanks. The image is on my sandbox page Jaghbub. Alternatively, here is the image file  . — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adrian Velazquez 2003 (talk • contribs) 15:48, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
