Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hi Bjenks, I came across your photo of the painting and I question the copyright status of the image. Owning a print or painting does not grant copyright, even though the painting is a unique work and it is physicaly in your property the creator still holds the copyright on it. Your photo of the image is a derivative work and you still need his written permission on the cc-by-sa licensing either on the complete painting or only to this single photo. Thanks, it seems I may have inadvertently drawn a wrong inference about the transfer of a copyright together with the subject work at sale. I can't see that COM:DW provides a definitive answer, and I haven't time to pursue specific legal advice, so I'll happily delete it and any other photos I've uploaded which may be questionable in this respect. I'm now also very concerned about my photos showing murals, statues and other construable artforms with an identifiable creator. Cheers Bjenks (talk) 02:46, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Further to the above, what is your opinion about these three photos which I have licenced to Wikipedia, though I now realise that the original artwork's creator is probably still alive and has not given permission. (See information here) Only the last one is in Commons.

Hi Bjenks, without reviewing your uploads i can call your attention to Commons:Freedom of Panorama, this rule allows derivative works of artwork permanently located in a public place, this is granted for GB and Australia. e.g. w:en:File:Catalp1152 lg.JPG is perfectly fine. Im unsure about the clock because im not sure what is meant with "public place" for Australia. In most countries public places are streets, places and gouvernmental buildings, so mostly outdoor place. So im not close to this issue. Im also personaly thinking that the turret clock and the australian images are ok, only the detail photo of The Stolen Generation might be a derivative work, but because i dont know if FOP applies i would not judge it. The image is sorted to Category:Queen Victoria Building, so maybe someone who works on this images and knows the copyright law of Australia will nominate it for deletion in future. Humber

Hi, I've been mulling over your thoughts (now in your WP talk archive) about contributions to the Rootes Group page.

I have also become dispirited by the lack of high quality photographs of Humbers and Hillmans made before 1950. I can tell you have a phone or some means of taking photos so please, would you create some suitable photos. I've done my best and it is not good enough.

Greetings again. Sorry, I haven't been able to attend rallies for some years and thus have little opportunity to take pics. The older ones I have are generally not as good as counterparts available on Commons. I have some of brass-age (pre-Rootes) vehicles, which I will consider uploading for the Humber article.
