No more update since March 25thEdit

Hi Multichill, it refers to the subpages of User:Multichill/Same image without Wikidata. Maybe you have a look at it. --Arnd (talk) 04:57, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

I had to move all my stuff on Toolforge ([1]) and this probably broke in the process. Thanks for pointing it out, I missed this one. I'll have a look. Multichill (talk) 20:09, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
@Aschroet: the memory usage of the tool was slowly growing quite large. Now it hit the limit of maximum memory usage on a single execution host (bit under 8GB). I disabled the job for now.
I probably have to completely restructure and rewrite it. I knew that would happen at some point, but I have been putting it off. I'll ping you when I have something new. Multichill (talk) 17:15, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

Flickr batch uploadEdit

Hi Multichill! I have placed a request for a Flickr batch upload at [2], but I am uncertain if the page is still active. Please let me known if this is the proper procedure, or if I should do otherwise... Thank you! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 07:28, 5 May 2019 (UTC)

@पाटलिपुत्र: good question, I doubt it. I haven't looked at that page for a very long time. Multichill (talk) 19:09, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

Category:Salome vs. Category:SaloméEdit

Hallo Multichill! Category:Salomé refers to Salomé, Nord (commune in the Nord department in France), Category:Salome refers to Salome (daughter of Herodias). Wikidata Infobox and most of the Interwiki-Links are wrong! --GFreihalter (talk) 18:44, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

@GFreihalter: why did you leave this message here? Are you struggling to get it fixed or do you think I added the incorrect link? I think [3] and [4] should fix it. Multichill (talk) 19:07, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

Need help with editing protected filesEdit

Hey Multichill, I need a favor from you :)

Could you please make the following edits to these protected files?

Akoopal (talk) 07:48, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

Multichill (talk) 16:18, 22 May 2019 (UTC)
Akoopal (talk) 08:58, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

speedyEdit

Hello, I was sure it is a reason for speedy, because I took a look into Special:WhatLinksHere/File:US_Navy_090326-N-9988F-002_Aviation_Boatswain's_Mate_(Handling)_2nd_Class_Jack_Terry_signals_a_pilot_from_the_.jpg. Is it not applicable for checking across projects? --Keks by 16:35, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

No, it's not. That will just show Commons, and Special:GlobalUsage/File:US_Navy_090326-N-9988F-002_Aviation_Boatswain's_Mate_(Handling)_2nd_Class_Jack_Terry_signals_a_pilot_from_the_.jpg will only show Wikimedia usage. Any usage of outside of the Wikimedia wiki's is invisible to us. And with InstantCommons enabled by default, that's probably quite a lot. Multichill (talk) 16:39, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for clarifying :) Have a nice day from the --Keks by 16:49, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

iNaturalistEdit

Hello Multichill, I remember that you talked in the VP about uploading free content from iNaturalist. I wonder if you can upload with a BOT all the images made by this person even the one whose ID has not been confirmed by an other user. This user is a passionate of marine animals and his knowledge is certain, therefore the identification given are for the most part very very certainly good, I looked to several images and have searched images of the same said species in scientific publications, and each times the identification was credible. Plus the fact that there is in this account a signifiant number of images of specimen images that we still don't have here. I have uploaded a few images and I plan to upload much more, and if it could be done by a BOT then it would be an incredible time saving for me. The purpose will be to upload the all the images at least in a category in the kind Category:Images by predomalpha to check, and I will sort the images with categories for the species and for the places (when relevant), and I will delete or nominate for deletion the images that have a poor quality and/or a poor identification. Possible? Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:36, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

BotMultichillT dupes CommonsEdit

BotMultichillT
2018

Ramblersen
2014

Hello.
Images are the same, as far as I can see – only JPEG metadata (Exif) differ. You should, at very least, merge these two File:s, as simply deleting the older upload would be disrespectful to the original uploader. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 16:20, 4 June 2019 (UTC)

Colors are different so these two shouldn't be merged. Multichill (talk) 16:29, 4 June 2019 (UTC)
I got the colors thing now: the older is in Adobe RGB whereas the bot’s uses default JPEG color (sRGB? I’m no expert here). The pixels are evaluated to the same (or very similar) RrGgBb values, but on the monitor the Ramblersen’s upload looks much more colorful that the bot’s. Are you sure that the newer file specifies correct colors? Wasn’t it [accidentally] decolored by stripping of the color profile information? Incorrect interpretation of Adobe RGB data as they were sRGB with its narrower gamut theoretically produces this effect. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 16:58, 4 June 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data - testing qualifiers for depictsEdit

As you might have seen, testing is underway for adding qualifiers to depicts statements. If you have not left feedback already, the Structured Data on Commons development team is very interested in hearing about your experience using qualifiers on the file page and in the UploadWizard. To get started you can visit Test-Commons and chose a random file to test out, or upload your own file to try out the UploadWizard. Questions, comments, and concerns can be left on the Structured data talk page and the team will address them as best as they can. Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:08, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

Commons:Project scopeEdit

I saw you undid a couple of revisions I made to this page, where I replaced

  • Wikimedia projects with Wikimedia Foundation projects
  • Microsoft Word and Excel with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel

The templates have little effect in the English version of this page. However, they "show through" into translated versions of the page where the English text has not been translated, which is common, and link to articles in the corresponding Wikipedias. You will see the effect at Commons:Project scope/it#Must be an allowable free file format, as long as your reversion has not been flagged for translation. I think this is an improvement.

You may not have noticed that the new Wikimedia Foundation, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel templates are meant to be used on Commons/Help pages, and by default use the page language rather than the user language. Should they have a different name format to make that more obvious? E.g. WPL-Wikimedia Foundation or something? Aymatth2 (talk) 20:47, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

Actually they do, I noticed "Wikimedia projects" changing to "Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. projects". Using templates in full text for translation generally complicates things. I would stick to plain links or only use a bit of logic for the linking part. Multichill (talk) 15:31, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
I believe it is important to recognise that text on English pages will show in other language versions, and should link to target pages in the version's language where possible. I have tweaked Wikimedia Foundation so it accepts a display name. E.g.
A link to en:Wikimedia project, a redirect to an anchor in an English Wikipedia page seems an impossible challenge to the translator. The German and French translations of Commons:Project scope both give up and link to Wikimedia:Home. Would you be o.k. with replacing en:Wikimedia project with Wikimedia projects? Aymatth2 (talk) 00:21, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
That looks like a good solution. Multichill (talk) 09:41, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. I fully agree that using templates in full text to translate bits of text rarely works well, but this should work o.k. The translator can choose whether to let the article name show through or to replace it by some other text. Aymatth2 (talk) 12:38, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

Depicts itself?Edit

Hi! This edit looks quite strange for me. I think this picture depicts József Eötvös, not Portrait of József Eötvös—it is Portrait of József Eötvös. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:00, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

@Tacsipacsi: Hi to you! In this case we have two works
The painting depicts József Eötvös (Q469996) (that's on the item). The photo depicts and is a digital representation of the painting. So it's a two step approach. Of course you want to search for the guy and find this file, for this we have phab:T223815 open. Does that make it clearer? Multichill (talk) 15:37, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
It’s still weird for me, but I understand your point. What I still don’t understand is why is it worth storing twice (once in depicts (P180) and once in digital representation of (P6243)). By the way, does anything use these statements currently? —Tacsipacsi (talk) 11:15, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
@Tacsipacsi: see also Commons talk:Structured data#digital representation of. As far as I know, these statements are not used anywhere (besides being in the search). It's a bit of a chicken and an egg problem, you need a lot of statements to do something nice with it, you only add statements when something nice is being done with it. By seeding it a bit I hope not to get stuck in this cycle. Multichill (talk) 11:30, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

Bot not marking its edits as bot editsEdit

Hello. BotMultichill is making lots of edits at present, but they are not marked as bot edits. This is making it difficult to notice any other edits mixed in to the list. Can you set the bot flag for its edits? --Mirokado (talk) 11:20, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

@Mirokado: thanks for your message and sorry about that, looks like the bot field fell out. Edits are now marked as bot edits. Multichill (talk) 11:27, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data on Commons - IRC office hours this week, 18 JulyEdit

The Structured Data team is hosting an IRC office hour this week on Thursday, 18 July, from 17:00-18:00 UTC. Joining information as well as date and time conversion is available on Meta. Potential topics for discussion are the testing of "other statements", properties that may need to be created for Commons on Wikidata soon, plans for the rest of SDC development, or whatever you might want to discuss. The development team looks forward to seeing you there. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:51, 16 July 2019 (UTC)

--Havang(nl) (talk) 09:49, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

@Mike Peel:. Switching to English. Category:Inscriptions on the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile is full of clutter. First category is Category:Jean Charles Abbatucci. The Wikidata Infobox makes that Category:Jean Charles Abbatucci ends up in Category:Inscriptions on the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile. I don't think that's intentional. Can you have a look? Multichill (talk) 10:17, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
It's being added because Jean Charles Abbatucci (Q727261) has award received (P166)=names inscribed under the Arc de Triomphe (Q1313340), which in turn has category for recipients of this award (P2517)=Category:Names inscribed under the Arc de Triomphe (Q9557338), with a commons sitelink of Category:Inscriptions on the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile. That's the normal route that's followed by the infobox to add awards categories, so you'd need to change some part of that for the infobox to stop adding this category. Hope that helps. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 13:19, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
Is it possible to change in names inscribed under the Arc de Triomphe (Q1313340) the award winners item Names inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile into People inscribed on the arc the triomphe and then study how to avoid that bad commons sidelink ? --Havang(nl) (talk) 17:23, 12 August 2019 (UTC)
I've created Category:People inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile and Category:People inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile (Q66442436), and moved the subcategories there, does that make sense? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:34, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
I think that the problem is solved now, I removed the cross-linking categorie and the line « See also: Category:inscriptions on the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile» and a corresponding line in this category. I go check if this works. Thanks--Havang(nl) (talk) 16:24, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
There is a substantial reduction of number of cross-linked files between those persons and war memorials in France https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=10580568, so that's a good improvement. --Havang(nl) (talk) 16:39, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2019Edit

Hallo Multichill,

Fijne avond, Multichill (talk) 20:20, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Multichill (talk) 08:25, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Cross-checking monument IDs with Wikidata to add Commons sitelinksEdit

I'm quickly re-running this for my usual set of Commons templates vs. Wikidata IDs, e.g. [9], to catch any that have changed over the last few months. The IDs I've checked are:

Are there any others it would be useful for me to run through? I'm minimising my monument-related edits now ahead of WLM, although I would have liked to have pushed for the adoption of MonumentID (e.g., see File:At Paraty, Brazil 2017 107.jpg) more than I had the time to do. :-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:00, 30 August 2019 (UTC)

@Mike Peel: the list is probably much longer than that I think, see also Category:Cultural heritage monuments with known IDs. One I recently created is Rijksmonument complex ID (P7135) = Rijksmonumentcomplex. I would me careful with the start of WLM to not break anything. To me MonumentID looks like a bad approach. Why introduce some new template when you can just pull it from the structured data using LUA? With LUA access to the local data, we can just go over the depicts statements and use some logic to display whatever template we like without changing the wikitext. Multichill (talk) 10:41, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
OK, let me know if there are any particular ones it would be useful to run through. My plan with MonumentID is to connect that with Depicts statements once they become available, then we no longer need the locally defined QIDs. It's better to link to the Wikidata item (with a hopefully easy migration plan for the future) rather than storing more data in templates here. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 10:45, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
BTW, MonumentID is a spin-off of the Wikidata Infobox code, which is quite well tested nowadays. I wouldn't call it "barely a prototype" as you have done below. Mike Peel (talk) 13:35, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Template IDEdit

Hi Multichill, You have more insight in this matter, please have a look to this change. I suspect in it is not ready? Thanks! Romaine (talk) 12:10, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

@Romaine:, see previous topic, MonumentID is barely a prototype and shouldn't be used anywhere in this state, let alone in a big photo competition that is starting in less than 24 hours. Multichill (talk) 12:13, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
In the monument lists (like w:pt:Wikipédia:Wiki Loves Monuments 2019/Portugal/Lista/Lisboa) there are now different IDs then before. Changing back to Template:WLM-PT will break it too, as the old monument IDs are mixed with Wikidata IDs. Romaine (talk) 12:30, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

WLM-BR campaign upload wizardEdit

Hi there! You've made this change and now uploads from Brazil are getting all wrong. I will ask to restore to the version we have worked on, but would like to know from your end why you thought the Wikidata template we are using would lead to "we'll get a lot of broken uploads". Please, let the Brazilian template as is at this point while I understand your impression, so we don't have further mess-ups. Thanks. --Joalpe (talk) 10:07, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

Depicts statement precisionEdit

Please adjust bot to not add places (towns, cities, their districts) as value for depicts property. Examples of bot's problematic behavior: File:USA-San Jose-South Bay Yacht Club-2.jpg, File:USA-San Jose-Henry Wade Warehouse-2.jpg. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 19:49, 14 September 2019 (UTC)

My bot added the item for the correct the historic district. You're welcome to replace it with more specific items if you think that is needed. Removing these valid claims is quite counter productive. Multichill (talk) 20:37, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
You didn't convince me about usefulness of too broad statements. Historical districts are usually large (including Alviso) and contain a lot of buildings and it's reasonable to have dedicated Wikidata items for them. Same could be said for Category:Agnews Developmental Center, at least for administrative buildings. Other example is Category:Mare Island Naval Shipyard. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 05:01, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
@EugeneZelenko: I guess your case is mostly about historic districts and contributing properties? If items for the contributing properties exist, the depicts statement can be changed to that one. I had a look at some examples and none of them seem to have a Wikidata item. If that would be the case, we could apply some logic to add a more specific depicts statement. Take for example files in Category:Superintendent's House, Agnews Developmental Center. These could all be linked to a more specific item Superintendent's House (Q67576318) based on the fact that Category:Superintendent's House, Agnews Developmental Center (linked with Superintendent's House (Q67576318)) is a subcategory of Category:Agnews Developmental Center (linked with Agnews Developmental Center (Q4693186)), Agnews Developmental Center (Q4693186) is a historic district and Superintendent's House (Q67576318) is located in that district and all have the NRHP. We also have NRHP contributing property (Q1129142). Not sure how to find if this building is actually one. Multichill (talk) 09:39, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
Yes, bot should not add properties for wide areas (districts, towns, cities, etc). It should add only building. Yes, such items could be and should be added to Wikidata. By the word, Category:Taj Mahal as another example. Qualifiers are another subject for discussion and they are very important for cases like Category:Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:28, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

Similarly for this edit. I don't see the usefulness of saying that an image of a temporary exhibit of kokeshi that happens to be in a particular building depicts the building. Is this really what "depicts" is about? - Jmabel ! talk 21:10, 14 September 2019 (UTC)

You did add the NRHP template so you seem to have considered it useful to add.
Current wording of the template is "This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 82004245". Multichill (talk) 21:14, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
So perhaps the NRHP template should be reworded, because we use it a lot on things that are much to "narrow" to be depictions of the whole landmark. But clearly this image doesn't depict the building in the sense that was discussed when we discussed the intent of depicts. And this even more so. Do we really want to say that a picture of some gauges depicts a building? That was not at all what I understood from the discussions before "depicts" was introduced. - Jmabel ! talk 21:20, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
I created the template and a lot of similar ones as part of Wiki Loves Monuments. The intention and wording was always about what you see in the image. I don't think it's the right direction to change the wording. I guess now these kind of things become more visible.
It's a wiki so we can always improve. In the case of this file it could probably be moved to some location property and some other depicts can be added. We currently have no agreed way how to model location. I'm trying to get Commons:Structured data/Modeling started. Maybe you can help out? When the modeling is clearer, it becomes possible to create (automated) tools to import or improve (more) data. Multichill (talk) 21:35, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
I'd be all for having a way to model location.
As for being actively involved in the process, I've largely given up after making several proposals that were largely ignored and having someone (I think he was named Rodrigo de Argenton, not sure) tell me that I don't understand Wikidata (for which I wrote some of the help pages) well enough to participate usefully in the process. In general, I'd rather get work done and put in my 2¢ where something like this just strikes me as headed the wrong way.
Interesting about the intent of that template and, no, I didn't know that. I think is some of these cases it would then be more appropriate then to remove the template than say that is what this "depicts". Here is an even more egregious one. - Jmabel ! talk 01:07, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Just ignore that guy. Currently I hope to get source/author/license going so we have the basics covered. Location has several aspects:
  • Items for where is depicted, where it's made, probably more (currently mixed in categories)
  • Coordinates for the point of view, coordinates for what is depcited (like what we do in templates now)
That's going to be fun untangling that. In your example I added Sessilia (Q3175015) and marked it as prominent. Multichill (talk) 09:39, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
    • I'd have been willing to ignore that guy if my substantive suggestions had drawn responses. But they didn't, and I really lost interest in being actively involved. Sorry. There are other contexts here where I find my work is generally appreciated, so I try to stick to those. - Jmabel ! talk 16:38, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

By the word, it's reasonable to discuss new (especially huge) tasks on Commons:Bots/Requests. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 05:07, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

Thing has been running every once in a while for the Netherlands already, just expanded it with some more sources. Looks like the NRHP database never has been fully imported to Wikidata. That's a bigger blocker! That needs to be sorted out first. Multichill (talk) 09:39, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
