Tip: Categorizing images edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]][[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

"Own work" claims for scans, etc edit
Please do not claim that old Soviet stamps, etc are your "own work". Such images, if they indeed fall into the public domain, should be marked as {{PD-old}}, or some similar PD Soviet tag, and attributed to the correct author, where possible, otherwise marked unknown. That you scanned them in may be noted, but it does not make you the author. -mattbuck (Talk) 18:34, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you, Florian Stöger for having restored this nearly 3 year old message from Mr. Buck, in which he wrongly advises me to apply inappropriate copyright tags to photographs and scans that were my own work. I very much appreciate not only his helpfulness but yours in helping me to maintain my own talk page. I have no idea how I would have thought to have removed this notice, which really should be preserved for the permanent record. - Thank you, Florian Stöger for having restored this copyright warning template of a deleted file. The source of the file was a copyright-clear postcard from 1922, for the record. The fact that I'm not going to contest Commons deletions does not equate my acknowledgement of the correctness of the tag. But, it is very, very good to have this template preserved. (Is there any way to tell whether it was applied through use of automated tools, or did the tagger spend more than five seconds on the tag?) Carrite (talk) 17:42, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

- Your comment about the "essence of Commons" was not only essentialist ;) but really uninformative. Commons is a place you can post good stuff for others to use, if you want. Please try to maintain for yourself the option of posting from this account. Maybe you can post pdfs of guitar chords from a songbook ridiculing William Taft or something similarly amusing....
- Russavia, Tim could contribute tons of great media, if he wanted. It might be worthwhile trying to pacify him so be returns to the friendly opposition and reconsiders donations, which can only help Commons.

Regarding my ban edit
I saw your comment on that Wikipediocracy thread about Keilana's Signpost article. Just so you know, GW did recuse on my ban. She was the one who notified me that my e-mail reporting admin misconduct had been forwarded to the Committee and that was the only communication I received from anyone on the Committee before my ban came down. To her credit, she stayed out of the noticeboard discussion about my ban unlike Gamaliel who had also recused, though doing so didn't stop him from revoking my e-mail access on English Wikipedia after the fact. Keilana, on the other hand, was one of the Committee members who supported my ban.--The Devil's Advocate (talk) 00:04, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
