First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

 

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Cyclone tracks

Hi, apparently this file contains correct sourcing information for the background maps of your cyclone tracks. Would you please care to update the image pages to include this information? Thanks in advance. In the interval I must tag them as missing a source, but take it as a reminder that you should just provide the right info. Also, please pay attention to image source, apparently you've often credited the NASA for non-NASA pictures. I may come up with a deletion request for a few files for which I could not determine authorship or copyright status. Thanks in advance for your help. I have created Category:Storm Prediction Center products for graphics of SPC watches, outlooks, mesoscale discussions, or storm reports. I think I have found the majority of these that are currently on commons (if you find others, please place them in the category), but the category is available for future uploads. Hello. What is the meaning of this and similar edits removing categorizations? I'm not sure what you're trying to do, and it seems to be making images much less useful, harder to find, and removing context. What am I missing? Wondering, -- Infrogmation (talk) 17:24, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

I am restoring the removed subcategories. Note that subcategories are useful for when two or more topics intersect. For example that from your edits anyone looking in the Category:1909 in New Orleans wouldn't have seen any indication of a hurricane that year. I'll assume this was a misunderstanding on your part. Something appears to be wrong with File:Calvin 2011 track.png. One previous version of the image appeared to be incorrect about Hurricane Calvin's storm track, so I tried to revert to the version you last uploaded, the one on 03:00, July 10, 2011. However the issue didn't seem to go away, even after purging the page. I'm not sure how to fix the file issue here, so could you take a look? —stay (sic)! 15:08, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

Hmmm, I just noticed on the top of the screen, it says, "System notice: There is currently a problem with thumbnail generation when images are replaced/updated, a solution is being worked on." Maybe that could be the reason, but I'm not sure. Just didn't want to mess up the image. —stay (sic)! 15:11, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

I maintain separate year-to-date HURDAT format files (the format used in w:Talk:2011–12 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season/Tracks) for each basin, which only include the relevant parts of the tracks of storms which cross boundaries.--Keith Edkins (talk) 17:03, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

...you may very well have a reason for cutting off part of the right side, but would it be possible to just use a higher resolution instead? The reason why I ask is just because it would be helpful if not only could the viewer be able to more easily see the more important part of the track, but the disturbance part would be visible too. CYCLONE. ANIMATED MULTISPECTRAL SATELLITE IMAGERY DEPICTS A BROAD, 
EXPOSED LOW-LEVEL CIRCULATION CENTER (LLCC) WITH DEEP CONVECTION 
DISPLACED OVER THE SOUTHEAST PERIPHERY OF THE LLCC. A 212320Z ASCAT 
IMAGE INDICATES A SYMMETRIC CIRCULATION WITH AN EXTENSIVE BAND OF 
GALE-FORCE WINDS OVER THE SOUTHERN SEMI-CIRCLE. THE LLCC IS LOCATED 
POLEWARD OF THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE AND IS LOCATED UNDER SUBTROPICAL
