Licence et auteur edit

Hello Cyriac

Tu as uploadé la photo File:Alain Lobognon Michel.jpg.

Licensing edit

Here is a short and very simplified walkthrough related to images when you are in the situation where you want an article to be illustrated but do not have the image to do so. What can you do ?

First thing is to remember that ALL images published on Wikimedia Commons MUST be either public domain or under a free licence. I invite you to read this as well as Commons:Licensing to see which licences are okay. Generally, cc by sa 3.0 is the classical choice.

1. First option: look in databases of images published in the public domain or under a free licence. Images published by the USA gov are typically under public domain. In Flickr, you may also find many images published under cc by sa. You may also look into google image, using advance search in restricting search to those images with free licences. See more on w:en:Help:Public domain image resources

2. Second option: take your own camera and go make that picture yourself. Remember that images for notorious people should be taken in public event, such as political meetings, book fairs and such. Or you may contact the person to ask him/her if you can show up to take a picture from them. Or you may try to get access to certain events by asking the organisers (for example, sport events). Take opportunity of open doors for building.

3. Third option: reuse of a picture that already exist. In this case, you need to get permission from the author of the picture. But the tricky thing is that it should not be a private authorisation that can not be "checked". Even if you are no more around in 5 years, we need a way to be SURE that the author REALLY gave his go and really understood the implications. So, how do we do that ? The author of the picture MUST send an email giving explicitly his ok for the publication of his image under a free licence. We have models of the email content to facilitate your life. Here is a typical model in French or here in English Commons:Email templates. In this case, the author must send this email to a specific email address (such as permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). The email will be treated by w:en:OTRS members and archived where some trusted wikipedians can check it in the future.
Practically, if someone (such as the communication department of a politician) send you a picture saying "yes, you can use it", the proper way of doing things is

  • you upload the image
  • then you prepare the email content for the permission to simplify the life of the author
  • you send an email to the author asking him to send this template email to Permission email
  • then the team on OTRS will manage the request, archive it and place a little "text" on the image description to say that the authorisation has been received and is just fine. An example of such authorisation I treated may be seen here (look at the little orange ticket). Here is another one

For the sake of simplicity, we try as much as possible to do the options 1 or 2. But 3 makes sense in particular to get a unique picture that would be hard to reproduce (such as the image of a dead person or of an old building, but also a great portrait from a politician).

Note that we do not really bother to ask for such permission when the picture is of rather poor quality (hmmm, obviously made by an amator). But when the picture is obviously a good shot, made by a professional or a studio, then we DO care about making sure that permission has REALLY been given because we know such people can cause us trouble (complains, lawsuits...) and we do not want to "steal" their work.

I hope this clarify things. I know it is a bit complex but do not worry, we'll do it together and after one or two times, you'll feel confortable with the process.

Île aux chimpanzés edit

Bonjour Cyriac.

Study shows Wiki Love Africa recruitment makes a difference edit

Hello Cyriac Gbogou

We are writing because you have participated in the Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) photo competition in the past. Results have been published and winning pictures may be seen here !

This year WLA partnered with the research organization CAT Lab (previously CivilServant) to help us evaluate the effectiveness of one of our recruitment efforts. You may or may not have received a message on your user talk page encouraging you to participate again in this year's competition.

We are excited to share with you their study found our recruitment message was a success and may have resulted in as many as 2,000 additional contributed photos. We hope you agree this is great news for Africa and its representation across Wikimedia. You can read more about the study and the results in this blog post.

If you have any questions about the study, we encourage you to ask CAT Lab's research manager Juliakamin(cs).
