Hello, Formica rufa!

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File renamesEdit

File renames like File:Nicolas Poussin 031.jpg are not covered by File renaming criterion #2: The name is neither meaningless or ambiguous name. Please refrain from such renames in the future. As the page says: In general, Commons aims to provide stable file names as there might be external file clients and file moving involves significant human and computing resources. Thus renaming should be used with caution. Thank you, Multichill (talk) 19:05, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Hello Multichill. I don't agree: File:Nicolas Poussin 031.jpg is just the name of the author and a number. File:Nicolas Poussin - Et in Arcadia ego (première version).jpg includes the author's name, the work's title and the version. It's like the example File:Paris 319.jpg->File:Paris 75018 Rue Norvins no 018 Le Consulat z.jpg used in Commons:File_renaming#reasons. Anyway, I won't rename further files until a consensus is reached; I'm waiting for a reply, then :)
By the way: happy new year, man--Formica rufa 19:14, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
Please don't hop talk pages. I have a watchlist and I use it.
Yes, you're rename is a better file name, but the whole policy is to prevent people from improving file names that are not bad in the first place. Multichill (talk) 19:18, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
My point is those names are bad. They don't mean anything: just a painter's name. I really can't understand why Paris 319 should be bad and Poussin 31 should be good. We had 82 works by Poussin just called "Nicholas Poussin" and a number. We had 20 Giambellino just called "Giovanni Bellini". And so on: Abel Grimmer and many other ambiguous, bot-like names --Formica rufa 19:25, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Maybe you use your watchlist, but you stopped me while I was completing a task on Commons and continued editing here while I was waiting for a reply on your "policy-says-A-you-are-doing-A-but-this-is-bad-because-I-say-it-is-bad" topic. It's very unkind of you. You can find me there. Thanks--Formica rufa (talk) 12:06, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
That's a nice series of paintings, but "Nicolas Poussin" is way more specific than "Paris". This is the naming convention used by the about 10.000 paintings of the Yorck Project about 10 years ago. The quality isn't always that good. Maybe you can upload some higher resolution version under a better name? Multichill (talk) 13:57, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
@Ymblanter: looks like you assigned this user file mover rights about a month ago. Can you give your opinion? Multichill (talk) 14:04, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
Well, the example is strictly speaking not allowed by the policies. Sometimes we are lax and let such files renamed, but if someone (like Multichill in this case) objects, the issue need to be discussed - first with the user, and, as you do not seem be agree, possibly by a village pump.--Ymblanter (talk) 16:25, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
@Ymblanter: Hello and thanks for your reply. I didn't rename any file since I received Multichill's message, in fact. Can you please me explain why it's not allowed by the policies? I really can't understand. I quoted the example File:Paris 319.jpg->File:Paris 75018 Rue Norvins no 018 Le Consulat z.jpg. Can you quote the part of the policy which doesn't allow it?
When I create an article on a Wikiproject I search for that article's name on Commons. If the image illustrating Et in Arcadia ego is called "031" I won't find it. Anyway, I'll give it up--Formica rufa 16:35, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
This is a question of the interpretation. Some people use to inteprter the string "completely meaningless names"strictly that the others. I, as the Delinker operator, usually let things get renamed even if they are not strictly speaking "completely meaningless"; other users sometimes disagree. This is not a question between me, you, and Multichill; it should be properly discussed in the community.--Ymblanter (talk) 17:17, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
@Ymblanter: Thanks again for your kind message and please pardon me for my late reply. Of course it's not personal; it's never a personal matter. I think all of us is here for the sake of Wikimedia projects. Anyway: Commons:Village_pump#File_renaming --Formica rufa 10:48, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
