File:Kampen, Eiltank 39 D 04804490. 28-02-2022. (actm.) 01.jpgEdit

Good evening GRDN711, Thanks for the comment on my photo. I have tried to get further details of the ship via the internet. By searching, among other things, on the ENI number 04804490 and the EU Number 2324686. I can't get any further with the name of the ship either. What is wisdom? Greetings, --Agnes Monkelbaan (talk) 15:15, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

Hello Agnes Monkelbaan: As this ship is a small inland tanker, mostly sailing in European canals and waterways, it tends to be referenced by MMSI, ENI and EU numbers, even call sign. However, it has a relatively unique name, and if you just do a Google search on "EILTANK 39", image and site references pop up. There are references to its IMO number (generally considered the best as a unique identifier of the hull when built that does not changef over time). While there are IMO references in some commercial sites like Fleetmon and MarineTraffic, a user site that is both comprehensive and quite accurate is Shipspottingdotcom. There are images going back to 2000 when it was named the "Van Gogh". Another Dutch site for ship collections is De Binnenvaartshipen. --GRDN711 (talk) 16:29, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

  • Thanks for your information. If I understood correctly I should add DC2786 to the category. Is that right?--Agnes Monkelbaan (talk) 16:55, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
    Hello Agnes:
“DC2786” is the callsign for the radio on the EILTNAK 39. While it is part of the ship information, it can be moved with the radio or re-assigned. The IMO # is the best unique identifier of the ship.
When a new ship is added to Commons, there are two steps taken.
    1: Create “Category:IMO #######” as a sub-category under parent category “Category:Ships by IMO number”.
The IMO # is assigned to the hull of the ship when built, never changes. It is a unique descriptor and more universal among ships than MMSI, ENI, EU or Callsign numbers which the ship may also have.
    2: Create “Category:Ship’s Name (ship, build year)” as a sub-category of “Category:IMO #######”
Ships can have different names at different times in its useful shipping life but only one name at a time. This one has had 4 different names over its shipping life to date.
Note sure if you are aware of this, but there are 8 other similar ships to this one named "Eiltank" with different numbers (Look up under Commons Category:Ships by Name).
Once you have done these two steps, typically another User from Wikidata will create corresponding Wikidata items for the ship data (MMSI, ENI, EU or Callsign numbers; GWT, home port etc.) which will show up as info boxes in these two categories. If you want to, you can do this as well but you don’t have to.
I did not make up with this system. it’s just the way Commons organizes ships. It is quite logical and has been in use for many years. An example is an image of the Icelandic tugboat Leynir.
I have taken the liberty of creating Category:IMO 9156967 under parent category “Category:Ships by IMO number” and then creating Category:Eiltank 39 (ship, 2000) as a sub-category under Category:IMO 9156967. I have assigned your image of the “EILTANK 39” to Category:Eiltank 39 (ship, 2000).
Through the VI scope as follows, the claim becomes that this ship is the most valued image in Commons of this ship by name. Through the image, the ship name is connected to the unique IMO 9156967 even if more ships with that name exist.
    |scope=Eiltank 39 (ship, 2000)
The scope format I prefer is the following because the ships name category is referenced directly to its unique IMO #. The VI claim becomes that this is the most valued image in Commons of this specific ship of this name. So far I have yet to convince many that this is best scope format :).
    |scope=Eiltank 39 (ship, 2000) - IMO 9156967
    Best,
    Gordon GRDN711 (talk) 04:40, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
  • Good evening GRDN711, Sorry for my late response. Internet has been down for us all day. Your explanation is very complicated for me. That's because I don't speak the English language. Would you mind creating the category for me? Or is that a lot of work for you too? Many thanks in advance. Please let me know. Greetings from Friesland in the north of the Netherlands.--Agnes Monkelbaan (talk) 17:28, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
    Hello Agnes:
Sorry - I did not mean to confuse.
I have created both categories - Category:IMO 9156967 under parent category “Category:Ships by IMO number” and then Category:Eiltank 39 (ship, 2000) as a sub-category under “Category:IMO 9156967”. Your ship image is now categorized correcctly in Category:Eiltank 39 (ship, 2000).
All you have to do is modify your VI scope – suggest “Eiltank 39 (ship, 2000)” and link it to Category:Eiltank 39 (ship, 2000).
    Best,
    Gordon GRDN711 (talk) 22:21, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
  • Good evening Gordon, Great that you did that for me. I have since changed the VI scope. Thank you very much for all your effort. Greetings,--Agnes Monkelbaan (talk) 16:04, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

Fishing boat Schtroumpf in Port d ErquyEdit

Hi GRDN711: Thank you very much for your details about my Schtroumpf (ship, 1969), in Port d Erquy. I went back to the file history of both images and reverted them to the previous version, although the image quality is not very good.

I used the Lumix DMC-TZ60, which was mainly used for geolocation, but my camera had manufacturing defects (like other user friends). Since then I have been using a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX90V camera. For post-processing editing, I'm working using GIMP, or Rawtherapie 5.8, I'll be adjusting to 4-bit color depth instead of 8-bit.

Fishing boat Schtroumpf in Port d Erquy
Hello Pierre André:
Just to be clear, I do not know what is going on in this image, but something is amiss in either the resolution or post-processing.
What I see in this image, even at the VI low-res view, are big, blocky pixels that can be associated with very low-resolution image or some odd post-processing like JPEG compression or a lack of color depth.
Most images will have a color depth of 8 bits or higher. If somehow you were exporting your image with a atypical low color depth of 4 bits, this could cause the big, blocky artifacts visible in this image.
Definitely a good idea to use your new camera - it is the better one.
Best,
