A requestEdit

Perhaps you might consider not uploading any more images extracted from those Guardian PDFs unless they are clearly marked as the work of military or government personnel? Thanks. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 19:26, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Generally, I don't find it praiseworthy to spend one's time uploading a bunch of content from gov't sources just because you might believe it to be PD. Helping article editors get images to support their text is useful. Downloading from gov't websites and uploading to Commons is wasteful, in my opinion, if not foolish. Thanks for uploading File:U. S. Coast Guard- Small Cutters and Patrol Boats 1915 - 2012.pdf. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

If you are going to accuse me of being a "sockpuppetmaster" or "dedicated to violating our policies" you should do it privately. And it was the New York Times that "outed" your friend Joshua Boyle. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 15:31, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Despite my request, you seem intent on misrepresenting my words where I am currently unable to respond. Because of our communications difficulties, I wondered if you had a spectrum disorder, in which case I would change how I attempted to communicate with you. To call this "a mental illness" is insulting to people with those conditions. I suggest you revise your statement. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 15:19, 30 March 2018 (UTC)

Please watch what you say (a friendly reminder)Edit

Geo Swan, based on your remarks here, perhaps it will helpful for you to see this sockpuppetry investigation. If I had any other accounts, they would have been discovered at that time. Nor am I the person harassing you via Toronto-based IPs. Nor am I harassing J.C. Maçek III (or anyone else) via IPs.

Allow me to repeat my earlier advice - stick to boats. You are likely to end up blocked yourself if you continue to use poor judgment on articles pertaining to living people. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 15:17, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
  • Note to third parties... World's Lamest Critic was wikistalking me on enwiki, until they were indefinitely blocked for outing wikipedia contributors real world identities. Their wikistalking of me included multiple instances of what they characterized as "friendly advice" -- including the "friendly advice" that they thought I should check out a mental illness they thought I had. Geo Swan (talk) 15:24, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
Geo Swan, I did not suggest you had a mental illness or that anyone should "check out" anything (whatever you mean by that). I have previously clarified this. Equating autism spectrum disorders with mental illness is insulting. You really should stop doing that. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 15:57, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
  • Four uninvolved third parties told WLC that their comments were an insult at Wikipedia talk:No personal attacks [1]. WLC's exact comment was "I don't mean this in an insulting way, but do you happen to have a spectrum disorder? It may explain some of our communication difficulties." 23:56, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
Allow me to apologize for linking spectrum disorder when I should have instead linked Autism spectrum. My mistake. It was a genuine attempt to understand our communications difficulties at the time. I was willing to change how I was communicating with you if it would help. I have apologized for this, although it was not intended to be insulting and I continue to believe it is not an insulting question. I will not apologize again. You seem to be fixated on this. That's fine, but you insist on referring to people on the Autism spectrum as having a mental illness. They do not. Please stop making that inference. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 01:02, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
  • WLC's apology is not accepted.
WLC made these cracks about mental health as a shameful rhetorical ploy to avoid addressing civil policy-based attempts to have a meaningful dialogue.
To any third party readers, in the message above WLC asserts "I have apologized for this" -- implying they had offered an apology on an earlier occasion. That is just not true, not even close. Up until the insincere apology immediately above WLC was totally unrepentant, as the discussion at at Wikipedia talk:No personal attacks [2] makes clear. Geo Swan (talk) 09:21, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
Geo Swan, I have absolutely nothing to gain from lying about my motivation for asking the question. I give up. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 14:22, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
  • To Geo Swan and all interested third parties, World's Lamest Critic is Wikistalking me again as you can see here. And falsely accusing me of being someone I am not. Isn't there something that can be done about someone who obsessively follows others around Wikipedia? This person just needs to learn to leave others on Wikipedia alone. Neptune's Trident —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2606:6000:E7C2:E500:E402:F6E1:1805:1926 (talk) 00:53, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

An easy questionEdit

In the past, I have encouraged you to stick to articles about boats because of your lack of judgment when it comes to articles about living people. Perhaps that was not good advice. You have added two images to en:Fireboat Tiburon, an article you created about a specific boat: File:20071017 Tiburon fire boat.jpg and File:Tiburon Fire Department fireboat fights a fire on Angel Island, near San Francisco, 2008-10-13.jpg. Do these look like the same boat to you? World's Lamest Critic (talk) 22:09, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

For the record, the IP that undid your edit wasn't me. I don't know which boat is the right one. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 15:35, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

"Chicago, murder capital of the USA"Edit

Geo Swan, Chicago is not the "murder capital of the USA". In fact, it isn't even close, either by number or by rate. I understand why you might think that, though, since it is often misrepresented as such for political reasons. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 14:42, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Intellectual property in AfghanistanEdit

Hello. Following your inquiry about the current status of intellectual property in Afghanistan, I would like to inform you that the Parliament of Afghanistan passed a modern copyright law in 2008 [3]. Furthermore, Afghanistan has copyright relations with the United States since at least December 2017 [4] [5], and the country became a member of the Bern Union since 2 June 2018 [6].

Regarding your writings at the Village Pump about progress, I would like to say that I think joining international conventions has nothing to do with progress. I am an Iranian national. Iran is not a member of any international copyright conventions. While I very much like that my country joins the Berne Union and I actively campaign for it, I can understand why many people (including elites and intellectuals) oppose joining such agreements. They argue that we would be basically a copyright-importing country. Thus, we should pay high royalties to British, American and other Western publishers to obtain their permission, while we have virtually no products of our own to export. They argue that Westerners have colonized Eastern nations and have progressed through "plundering our riches." Now it is our turn to translate their valuable books and publications without paying a penny, and make progress at their expense. The debate is, of course, much more complicated, but it comes down to what I just said. Regards 4nn1l2 (talk) 03:34, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Steamboat moored on the Magnetawan River, winter 1923.jpg.

Thank you.

Thanks for uploading File:Letros Tavern (4504058663).jpg.

Thank you.

Seattle TilthEdit

I understand what you are doing by https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Seattle_Tilth&diff=323737436&oldid=297235238, in that part of Seattle Tilth is P-Patches, so it is categorized under Category:Seattle P-Patches, which is in turn eventually under Category:Urban agriculture but I think we somehow want to tie Seattle Tilth to urban architecture a different way as well: above all, Tilth is an educational center teaching urban agricultural techniques, and someone with no interest in P-Patch allotment gardens might be looking for that. Any thoughts? - Jmabel ! talk 15:50, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Jmabel, I am not strongly wedded to removal of the category. Since you seem to have given the matter some thought I will happily bow to your judgement.

A friendly note about Ellis Wiley stuffEdit

I think you forgot to create Category:Photographs from Ellis Wiley. If you are going to add images to a category, you need to make sure the category exists. And you screwed up whatever it was you were trying to do with the author field so now all of those images are missing the author information that they used to have. Maybe you could fix that? Best regards. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 02:30, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

Undeletion requestEdit

I wanted to add an additional note regarding my decision here and how to proceed. I understand that you are in contact with the flickr user and that they have updated their profile but to eliminate all doubt if you could get them to put All images on this profile are released into the public domain and I grant anyone the right to use them for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.

If they put that there I will undelete the images right away. The problem with the PDM mark is that, officially, it is not a legal instrument. It has no legal text whatsoever. It is just a mark for images that are in the public domain for another reason. That is why {{CC0}} exists. CC0 actually has legal wording behind it that the PDM lacks. It is this wording that matters since there are countries that actually do not allow people to just say something is in the "public domain". The wording above would allow you to then use {{PD-author}} as the specific phrase is there.

I know that this is a pain in the ass and I partly agree with you that forcing people to jump through hoops isn't ideal. It is just our hands are tied and have been ever since Flickr allowed the PDM to be used on uploaded photos without actually explaining what the PDM is for and what it cannot do. I really am sorry to force you to do this and I hope it can be worked out. Let me know the moment anything changes. --Majora (talk) 14:10, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

why the speedy tag?Edit

Geo Swan, why did you tag File:Newmarket Coach Lines bus 32 at garage.jpg as speedy based on URAA requirements? I see your talk page has a number of URAA-related deletion requests, but all of them are normal deletion discussions. Given the nature of the URAA debate on Commons, I don't see how a speedy tag applies for such files. Mindmatrix 18:17, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

  • Sure.
Images Salmon took himself passed into the public domain, in Canada, on the 50th anniversary of his death -- ie 2008. Years ago I uploaded some of images he took shortly before his death, taking the "public domain" license on the TPL and COTA at face value. However, one of those images was challenged, by someone who stated that, under US law it was not the PD status of those images, today, that counted. It was their copyright status in 1996, that counted. When I learned this I stopped uploading images Salmon captured after 1948-12-31. A couple of years ago I acquired several really dogged wikistalkers, who continue to harass me, even after they were served with indefinite blocks on the English language wiki. One of these individuals challenged an image I uploaded that Salmon took prior to 1948-12-31, but after 1946, claiming it too couldn't be proven to be in the public domain, in the USA.
I don't know how much you know about Salmon... He died in his forties, of cancer. Most of the images from his collection, that he took personally, are from the last few years of his life. So I think he took them when he had to take early retirement to get cancer treatment, but was sometimes well enough to get out of the house. It shows admirable determination.
Anyhow, I decided to check his images, and speedy any I uploaded, prior to learning about this URAA wrinkle, that could be challenged under the URAA wrinkle. I saw you also uploaded some, as did SecondaryWaltz. In retrospect I should only have speedied the ones I uploaded myself, and initiated a discussion over the ones other people uploaded. I apologize for that.
I have considered making an appeal to the Toronto Public Library, the City of Toronto Archives, to request that they formally waive any foreign intellectual property rights they retain, for all the images in their collection that are already in the public domain, in Canada.
If they agreed we could restore those Salmon image then, as opposed to waiting fro 2033.
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 22:59, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
No worries. I noticed what you had done well after the fact. As a side note, Salmon authored or contributed to at least two books (Etobicoke in Pictures, Rails from the Junction), so it's likely some of his photos made it into these books. I've only managed to find a reprint of Etobicoke in Pictures in Google Books (1971), but no preview is available. I can't find the other book. The Toronto Public Library has both in reference (Rails from the Junction - many copies, Etobicoke in pictures - one copy). If you happen to be anywhere nearby, can you briefly pore over them (a trip to TO for me would take too long; no library remotely close to me has these books). I suspect if a photo appears therein, and they were published early enough, it allows those images to skirt URAA, keeping in mind that IANAL. Mindmatrix 00:24, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
  • When I got that first challenge, 6 or 8 years ago, I found his images were included in a book sold at Montgomery's Inn, a heritage site in Etobicoke. The author of that book had collaborated with Salmon, sixty years ago. The Etobicoke Guardian used to have column about the history of Etobicoke, written by the collaborator, and illustrated with a photo from Salmon's collection.
The pair collaborated, for years. Montgomery Inn gave me the other guy's email address. He was, at the time, semi-bedridden. (His wife said he only came downstairs on good days, when she explained why she was answering his email.) They only received $2 per column. Yipes!
I am guessing that Salmon's widow may have only received one cent per image for his collection. Less, maybe.
The book available at Montgomery's Inn might have been "Etobicoke in Pictures".
Is it possible there is a video version of "Rails from the Junction"?

Category:Exposition of Tutankhamun Treasure in SeattleEdit

Just trying to clarify, because there is no date in any parent category, nor a remark: is this intended to refer to a specific exhibit? The most famous Seattle exhibit of the Tutankhamun Treasure was probably the one in 1978, but none of these photos appear to date from that one. - Jmabel ! talk 03:07, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

  • I am sorry, I don't remember. Geo Swan (talk) 20:18, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
    • Kind of weird to have a category where we can't say what it is intended to cover. - Jmabel ! talk 00:41, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
      • At the time I created the category I had uploaded some Tut images from a flickr site. I based the name of the category on the name of the original flickr uploader's flickr album. If you think the Seattle museum should have multiple categories devoted to Tut, that is fine with me. Alternately, if Seattle was just one stop for a traveling display, and you want a name that names the year, not the museum, that is fine with me, too. Geo Swan (talk) 00:47, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
        • I'm sure these were from a traveling exhibit (but with no idea where else it may have gone, I'll stick with Seattle). But I think we should get a year into the category name because, as remarked above, it's not the most famous Tutankhamun-related exhibit in Seattle history. I'll do that. - Jmabel ! talk 02:52, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
          • Great! I am comfortable following your judgement on a renaming. Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 04:12, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Which Kevin MacDonald?Edit

I moved Category:Kevin MacDonald to Category:Kevin MacDonald (actor). I suspect you will view this as "harassment" and "hounding". It is not. It is simply doing what you should have done when creating the category. There are several other people named "Kevin MacDonald", some of whom even have categories here already. Please check such obvious things before creating categories. Thanks. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 21:27, 10 January 2019 (UTC)

Your criticism is patent nonsense. A reader who didn't check those two categories might assume you had a valid point.
But you do not have a valid point, as it is long-standing practice to refrain from introducing pointless, unnecessary disambiguation. It only makes sense to create a category name, like Category:Kevin MacDonald (actor), when we have other images of a namesake, also named Kevin MacDonald.
I think practically everyone know better than to add pointless, unnecessary disambiguation to category names, and file names. It is worse than a waste of time, it is damaging in that it clutters up the namespace, and obfuscates what the categories really name.
We both know your past history of offering frankly unforgiveable non-professional mental health assessments. I am not going to follow your unforgiveable example, and speculate over what has triggered such an incredible focus of fault-finding that you find fault where none exists.
However, I know you saw my request to the administrator who blocked you for advice on how to have an interaction ban imposed on you. I believe this nonsense complaint further illustrates the importance of protecting the project from the damage wrought by your incredible focus of fault-finding.
As to avoiding genuine conflation of individuals, while there are times when it is obvious two individuals are namesakes, there are also a lot of namesakes where it is not obvious two individuals exist. And, there are instances where it seems obvious that there are two individuals, when, in fact, one individual has two disparate careers. Mistakes made in assuming two namesakes are a single individual, or that a single individual is two individuals are almost always instances of normal human fallibility. Fault-shaming good faith contributors occasional good faith mistake is, in my opinion, highly disruptive.
So, I am going to advise the administrator who blocked you, and pursue other's advice, on how to have an interaction ban imposed on you. Geo Swan (talk) 22:01, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
Lots of contributors strongly object to unnecessary disambiguation. Those contributors would assert that it doesn't matter whether this individual named Kevin MacDonald had namesakes, also named Kevin MacDonald, who our wikipedia colleagues would consider notable, so long as we don't have any images of them.
I started categories on dozens of individuals involved in the Canadian film and television industries, over the last few days. A minority of them had truly odd names, names so idiosyncratic that it is extremely unlikely they have namesakes whose images would be in scope. But most of them have names common enough that, if you really searched, you could find namesakes, whose images would be in scope, if we had images of them.
Should I have added unnecessary disambiguation to all those other new categories?
No, of course not. Your criticism, above, was complete nonsense. Geo Swan (talk) 22:01, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
You say " It only makes sense to create a category name, like Category:Kevin MacDonald (actor), when we have other images of a namesake, also named Kevin MacDonald". We have such images. When you created your category, we already had Category:Kevin MacDonald (footballer) and Category:Kevin Macdonald (director). A search on "Kevin MacDonald" would have revealed that. I suggest you take this simple step before creating new categories. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 23:47, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

  • Cherkash, I am sure certain mistakes you recently made were made in good faith.
When you find an image that is a genuine duplicate, you don't need to call for a discussion for its deletion. Just put a {{duplicate}} tag on the image description page. If the copy you think we should delete is a member of categories that make sense, you can copy them to the image you think should be kept.
However, once the duplicate has been deleted, and redirected, we keep the redirect, unless the deleted image was only here for a short time, for the reasons I explained elsewhere. Geo Swan (talk) 22:02, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
Geo Swan Thanks for pointing out the {{duplicate}} tag, I wasn't aware of all it's supposed to help with. So will keep in mind for any future cases like this.
As for the redirects being kept, not sure what are the "reasons explained elsewhere". Would you mind pointing to the elsewhere? Or just copy/paste here for all to see. Cherkash (talk) 13:48, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 16:55, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

Picture stolen by wiki leaks of confidential USA government dataEdit

Pictures stolen by wiki leaks of confidential USA government data, sharing or even possession is that crime in the USA?--138.206.258.237 08:57, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

  • Nope!
  • Years ago some elements of the DoD threatened that those who had a clearance to read classified documents were putting their security clearances at risk, if downloaded classified documents leaked to WikiLeaks. Those making this claim said that individuals with security clearances were allowed to view only those classified documents that were related to their jobs, or something like that. Viewing WikiLeaks documents wasn't related to their jobs. It didn't matter that the rest of the world was reading them. Professors with security clearances were warned that they might never get anohter government grant. Students who were planning to go into Government Service were warned that their reading of documents from WIkiLeaks could limit their career because they would then never qualify for a security clearance.

    I haven't heard this claim, since 2012.

I work on some non-WMF wikis. At two of them I initiated discussions as to whether we should or shouldn't allow the use wikileaked documents. One of those wikis was directly funded by DARPA. I was told there that I could not upload any wikileaked documents, and that I shouldn't link directly to the WikiLeaks site, but that quoting or linking to third party sites was completely okay.

If simply possession was a crime I think we would know that.

Note, the strictures that site asked me to observe were only due to their funding. The WMF is a non-profit, supported by donors, so those strictures wouldn't apply here. Geo Swan (talk) 17:51, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

Thank you.

A reminderEdit

You have an obligation to abide by the policies here, namely those of COM:SCOPE and COM:LICENSING. You uploaded an image with no authorship or copyright information from a military site. User:JuTa tagged it as missing a license. You added a PD-USGOV-Military template and removed JuTa's tag. That would be fine if you knew that the image was public domain, but you didn't. You posted an email you sent asking about the license on the image's talk page, so you did not actually know what the license was.

I asked you about that and you ignored my question. What's more, when you posted the response to your email, you removed my question entirely and dismissed it as "nonsense". I restored it and would have been willing to let things slide since the images turned out to be public domain after all, but removing it again and calling it "harassment" is a problem. I keep track of your uploads because you make a lot of poor assumptions about copyright. You can ignore me, but it's not a good idea to get into an edit war over a legitimate copyright question. Category:Frankie Drake MysteriesEdit

Hi there. I found this category you created, which currently happens to be empty. Did you forget to populate it after creating it, or have the files been deleted or categorized elsewhere? Mindmatrix 18:13, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up. I don't know what I was thinking. I added three photos of actresses from the series, but those images were uploaded after I created the category. Maybe I was uploading an image related to the category, and got interrupted before I finished. Anyhow thanks. Geo Swan (talk) 20:23, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
